Just wondering what the most popular role within a squad was in Irish Airsoft at the moment.
By the way I know Scout Sniper and DM roles are close in airsoft terms but I think they still require a separate distinction

i would though rifleman as most people i have seen carry M4/m16 or g36's mind you i have only really started Airsoft

I my self have an M4 so i would be classed as a rifleman but i would like to try sniper/support down the line.

Since I am the leader of my team, I chose that. So far we have 1 support gunner and about 5/6 riflemen. No grenadiers because the GP-25/30s are all extremely expensive.

Communications are to be handled at the individual player level with comms systems. Would many teams use a one-man comms system? Perhaps MilSim-ers re-enacting Vietnam or WWII?

I suppose Communications is not as relevant as the others but if I didn't put it in someone would bring it up :)

Just one other thing it's Your favorite role choice so even if you are in a role don't worry you don't have to pick it. just pick the one that floats your boat the most

Ive played as a comms man myself. was deadly craic and the improvement over communication when only 1 chap was handling all the traffic was massive.

I'm often the Medic and more than not, a rifleman. Support role is another ive played and love doing it. I dont think i have a favourate really, Once i get to pew pew people with me shooty stick im happy. but i do play as a rifleman more. :)

I'll be one of many Rifleman. I like to move around, not staying and waiting, but that depend of the game situation.

    Chose rifleman,
athough I'd kinda be like a Grenadier, but that word has lost its meaning sinse modernization and modern warfare.
Like to be the man who leads the assualt, kicks the door first, dashes the field first and sacrifice first!
    Assault kinda!

I'm sure this poll has been done before or something like it but it would be interesting to see if people's choices have changed over the few years and compare the results. It could even be handy for site owners in a way to see what peoples choice of game type is and how it could be manipulated to suite the current trends.

For me it was a toss up between rifleman and other with other being recce, love playing in a smaller unit and for the most part no relying on anyone else other having to depend on them

I suppose what I meant by Grenadier was the boys with the m203's and the caw six type players, you know the type that love carrying a S$%t load of grenades with :D

Me and my RPK like to play a support gunner role :-)

That said, I do like picking up my G36C from time to time for more of a rifleman role.

My role is the "Lazy ****er". Leave the door-kicking to the youngfellas, and do your bit to man monster defenses and pick off fools.

I do love playing medic. Especially at themed events. I was a designated medic for two full days at RedHammer 1 & 2. Great craic! :D

This thread needs the best option available in Day of Defeat ... "Auto-Assign".

I generally play what's needed on the day within the limitations of my equipment, which usually equates to rifleman.

I assumed "Grenadier" was the guy with the 40mm shotgun and 6 tons of reloads for it. Historically (18th century historically) they were hard chargin' troops equipped with primitive grenades who took the fight right into the enemy. As time passed and the grenade fell out of favour (19th century armies didn't like grenades) they became just another line infantry but carrying with them the name which held prestige. Such prestige in fact that when specialist grenade troops surfaced again in WWI the British army refused to allow them be called grenadiers, they were bombers instead. Thus a "Grenadier" in the strictest sense isn't someone armed with lots of grenades but might be someone in a unit with an illustrious history or in the Soviet case a unit formed with a flash name and extra training for propaganda purposes.

For our purposes however it's someone with lots of grenades and probably (though not necessarily) a launcher.

Grenadiers were one of the two flank companies in a regiment in the 19th century - typically 8 companies of muskets, one of the short agile good shot guys armed with rifles as the light company (skirmishers), and the biggest, strongest, angriest guys as the grenadier company - as stated, armed not with grenades but with HARDCORE. In Napoleon's army, they were obliged by military law to have large moustaches.

I've played the medic role a bunch in milsims but it's nice to switch out - it makes you a valuable resource, meaning you aren't allowed get much action because you might get brapped and then there'll be nobody to fix people. I voted rifleman, although I'm seeing a transition to team leader in my future as more of my mates get into airsoft as newbies.

Though I have to say that I play rifleman but its not a simple as picking a role and sticking to it.

Some people you can work with well and some you dont, your role can change on who is on your team.

    I can't grow a moustache yet... :( phail...

For regular skirmishes I love being just a rifleman, ready to go swimming in what ever lake/river/Mystery lake puddles(red barn..) that i can find. Happily willing to sprint straight into fire, jump through windows, hedges, tbh what ever i can find.

But in Milsim or big skirmish games, i quite enjoy taking a Squad lead role, but i feel i can have more effect on the course of the game than just general brapping.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 578 ✭✭✭Danin

Stonewolf and evilrobotshane Thanks for the History Lesson :D:)
but it was either put in Grenadier to describe the role or "the lads with the big stuff" LOLZ :D

And can you imagine the posts describing that role if I had have used the later ha ha

only joking lads but on an other note it's not about what role you play but the roll you think would float your boat the most given the opportunity.

i played medic for half a day a few weeks ago,it was cool.but for me i think sniper when needed but normal grunt is cool......love the'' picking off fools'' by gerout , nice role when you get it

i like playing as a scout or working down the flanks either on my own or with a buddy, and get right in among the "enemy" and causing havoc. (and im not afraid to get wet doing so ;))

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,099 ✭✭✭Tommyboy71

I would have to say Medic. You can still be part of the action but you have to watch and listen for guys/gals getting hit. And sometimes you have to be a baxtard and leave them to bleed out cos there is just no way to get to them. The best bit is running through a firefight to get to a fallen comrade.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,200 ✭✭✭J.D.R

I don't know what I would consider myself. I am the person who would wait back in a game until everyone is bogged down, then stay hiden, come up and wipe everyone out while they were focusing on other targets.

I suppose I am pretty much an assasin!! Go Me!!!

Unless its CQB. Then I want to be the first in, and last out of the door

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 711 ✭✭✭Spooky-Vinny

Hey all, just found this picture of me when i was playing medic and thought i'd show you and let you have a laugh... or cringe :p

Look at how absolutly bolloxed i am in the photo from running EVERYWHERE healing EVERYONE!!! i can barely open my left eye! My face is messed up to the max! and that bottle of water im carrying i had to go off and buy mid game as i actualy needed it that much!

I was asked several times if I was the one that needed a medic while i was healing! LOL good times!

Just thought i'd throw it out there!

    xXx

I have to same I'm surprised at some of the early results of the poll. I knew the riflemen role would top but the likes of support gunner, I thought would have been more popular as you see a lot of lads with their M240, M249, and M60ies on sites these days and I thought the Sniper role would have been more popular as a lot of the younger lads think it's a "cool" role to play with the guillie suite and all that.

maybe we'r more realistic players on this pole then :P
as we know there is not much need for supporties(no offence, i do love the support guns though like, personal preference at the end ofthe day again, but lets not go there)
