    Moved to Laptops.

AFAIK its really a techie's job. Either that or a new motherboard :o Either way its likely to cost you a lot of money.

I'd imagine you need the motherboards replaced

i may be posting out of turn here OP, but what makes you think the CMOS chip itself needs replacing? what's wrong with the laptop exactly? it may just be that the CMOS BATTERY needs replacing, although even this would be unusual given that CMOS batteries have an average lifespan of 5-7 years and this is a relatively recent model from dell...

CMOS Chips usually only need to be replaced if you have "forgotten" your BIOS password.

Alternatively, removal of the Battery instead would be a lot easier to do, especially with a laptop.

Have you "aquired" this laptop from a friend? ;)

this information is incorrect. the cmos chip (without going into too much detail) stores BIOS configs (time/date, etc)

quite what are you trying to insinuate here i have no idea, but it certainly not helpful to the OP!

he's saying that the o/p 'stole' a laptop and cant access the bios and/or windows.

anhoooo, what do you mean exactly by a 'cmos chip', laptop motherboards have a plenthora of chips, replacing any of them is pretty much impossible without required tools and skill.

a cmos battery just holds bios info, it can be taken out and replaced easy. its just a coin cell.

a bios chip is a different kettle of fish, a botched bios upgrade for instance can get pretty messy....
