DPRK threatens military attack over U.S.-South Korea drills

PYONGYANG, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Thursday threatened a powerful military strike if the United States and South Korea launch joint military exercises, the official news agency KCNA reported.

The DPRK would "mercilessly destroy the aggression by mobilizing all the offensive and defensive means including nuclear deterrent" if they proceed with the drills next month, the KCNA reported.

The joint military drills staged by the United States and South Korea "light their true colors as war fanatics," said a statement released by a spokesman for the General Staff of the Korean People's Army.

The two countries are keen to "bring dark clouds of a nuclear war" over the Korean Peninsular, while "seeking escalated tensions and confrontation only," it said.

The U.S. and South Korean army announced that they would stage the DPRK-targeted Key Resolve and Foal Eagle joint military exercises from March 8 to 18, reported the KCNA.

Heavy forces including more than 18,000 U.S. troops deployed in South Korea and overseas are said to be involved in the exercises, the KCNA said.

Posturing or dangerous? Heavy choice of words. NK is one regime I'd support removing.

Pretty standard saber rattling on behalf of North Korea no?

That was my feelings on it, but what if they actually go the full hog? NK hasn't been shy when it comes to border scuffles. Do you think he might act, should SK and the US go ahead?

NK is a rational actor in many ways, scuffles with the US certainly, missile testing and so on but not actually stupid enough to start a war with the US which would only end badly for it.

Indeed. Trading pot shots with the south is one thing, getting bombed to oblivion another. Besides, there'd be no new movies for the Dear Leader for months.....

    I'd say it's just sabre-rattling.
NK knows these military excercises are aimed at them.
    So they are responding.
