Does anyone know where can I find some book or publication about history of the irish police?
I'm interested in whole history or the similar events like here

Go to the Garda Museum in Dublin Castle and I'm sure they can point you in the right direction.

I did a history piece on the Guards for the leaving cert (naturally you will want better sources of course, lol)

But the following are in my opnion excellent books about the history and social aspect of the Gardaí and would (even if your family were from fianna fail/old ira/anti later years eoin o duffy) grow to have a lot of respect for the first men (certaintly not women, as you know in those days they were making babies, drawing the hay and praying) of the boys in blue

Conor Brady's Guardian of the Peace

Geogry Allen's The Garda Siochana (THis man is a former member and current curator in the musuem)

If you can get your hand on David Neligan's spy in the castle, that might come in handy, to get an idea of what the RIC etc was like

The Dublin Metropolitan Police by Jim Herily

Take a glance in Fergus McGarry's book on Eoin O'Duffy to get a small idea of how the Gardaí ran during the early days or an idea of its ethos

I am sure you might know some friends or family members in the Guards who might be kind enough to lend you their monthly newsletter/gazzette.

Definitely try the musuem and if you can try and get a trip to templemore garda training college (they at least offered school tours, don't know about normal visits, unless you get on the pull on a saturday night with a trainee, cough cough)

Then of course there is the lenghty reading into the transcripts into the dongegal affairs - you should get them in most good libraries

    Hi Arthur,

Somebody posted in this history forum, a number of months ago, in reply to a question on history. They included a link to a Garda magazine which had a number of very interesting articles.

One article was about Lugs Brannigan, which I printed off & gave to a relative of Lugs that I know.

Another article concerned the theft of the Irish Crown Jewels from Dublin Castle.

And do you think I can find that post now? Maybe somebody else might remember this post. I always meant to ask where you could download this from, as it was very interesting reading.

Reading "Guardians of the peace" by Conor Brady I found informations about salary in Civic Guard formation(1922). I.e. Inspector was to start at £ 310, rising to 350. A sergeant: £ 5 a week rising to 5 12s and a guard £ 3 10s, rising to 4 10s.

How much money was that? How much was i.e. bread in those days? A pint in a pub? A meal in a restaurant?

Isn't it true that former G men of the DMP who had hunted and were hunted by Collins and his 'Squad' ended up in the Gardai with their former adverseries in later years in what would become the Special Branch?
