So my car has been written off. Not my fault, someone crashed into me. I had almost a full years tax left on it though, which I'd like to get back and use towards the tax on me next motor. Anyone know if there's a form on the revenue site that I can use to go about claiming it back?

Have searched here and on revenue and not seeing it, apologies if afflicted with temporary blindness..

To be honest and I could be way off but you cant transfer tax. I have tried on cars before I have sold and they have no way. Not sure if any difference if car is gone off road

yes you cant transfer tax from car to car like in the UK but we do have a system to claim back motor tax but theres certain requirements that have to be met such as :

a certain amount of tax remaining ie. you cant claim it back if theres a month or 2 only left.

but in the OP's case, they have nearly a full year so it is possible. sorry i havent got the form available but it can be done.

    EDIT - you need an RF120 Form - http://www.environ.ie/en/LocalGovernment/MotorTax/PublicationsDocuments/FileDownLoad,17194,en.pdf

Years since I did it, so the rules may have changed; at the time there had to be min 3 months tax left, and you had to be officially scrapping the car. The latter may no longer apply. Ask your local Motor Tax office, or maybe check website.

I was reading about the scrappage scheme the other day and you can recalim once theres over 3 months tax left

There has to be over 3 months left of tax on it, you have to get a garda stamp from your local station on the RF120 form and youll need to provide evidence of the scrapping of your car (receipt from the disposal company or whatever) from what I recall. Fairly boring paperwork but getting a cheque back from Dublin City Council was quite nice, from what I remember when it happened to me...

Once you have over 3 months left (from the date of write off I think) you can claim back the tax.

My car was written off last year, with just under 3 months left on the disc. Couldn't get the tax back - €150 gone.

Much obliged folks, that's the form I need. (and yes you need to have 3 months left)

Did their insurance pay for it?
If so they now own the car so you can't claim it back, all you can do is negotiate the cost of it with the insurance.

+1, the same thing happened to me and I had the ins co incorporate the road tax into the settlement value of the car.
