I lost my keys for my Corolla a while ago and have been using the spare key. I need to get a new key and I have just spoke to Toyota who informed me that getting a new master key for the Corolla will cost me about €1200 because I will have to replace the engine and immobiliser ecu because they can't reprogramme off the spare key.

This seems nuts! Does anyone know of any other way of doing this?

    Thanks

    Try a different dealer.

    Sounds about right to me.

The main key is the one you need if you want to reprogram keys.

All the bits and pieces add up. this is not a usual 'request', so, it is not a part that they sell often, and cheap.
It is an unusual part to order, and expensive.

Then you have to add the labour to change it.

I recently had my locks changed, and a new spare key programmed, and it cost me €500. So, getting a new ECU could account for the extra €700.

    Sorry OP.

    Try a good locksmith.

They seem to be able to code toyota keys without the black master key.

I looked into this before. They can "clone" the key you have.

A good auto locksmith will be able to pull the ECU out and reflash it to new keys. This will be considerably less than a New ECU from Mr T.

Well you are the US president!

If I had been quoting you I would have looked for more.

    Funny...

    Or not!

Anywho :P, OP there's always another way. Seeing as it's 1200 euro you're talking about I would be looking up all your options, and mainly talking to your local reputable locksmith and see what he can do!

I got a quote from them for a replacement key. They were quite a bit dearer than a main delaer.

Really we got a combo key done for a 1/3 of the price quoted from main dealer!

Depends on the car is suppose!

Had exact problem before with my 02 corolla(uk import).
Got a new key in Linders (chapelizod)...took about a week, they had to send chassis number off to england. Cost 90-something euro. And i did not have the master key!!

I was told that if i lost all the keys it would cost over €700 because the ecu would have to be taken out and sent away...

    Good luck!

Thanks for the info lads. I've been making some calls and it looks like there are a few locksmiths out there that might be able to look after me.

Just make sure that a key from a locksmith will work the remote central locking....the locksmith I rang said he could do a key but it would only start engine and open doors manually...

Go to a Toyota dealer with your log book and ask them for the key code. With the code any good locksmith can then make one up for you. Cost me €90.

I've seen used ECUs with spare keys for sale on e-bay, or a breakers might be an option?
