Have you ever spent time coming up with some brilliant invention for a book only to discover that it already exists or worse, it doesn't exist but someone invents it before you get around to publishing it?

It's happened me twice now - I basically invented the iPhone in 2006 and now everything groundbreaking I wrote just looks derivative.

(OK, this sort of assumes that Apple broke ground with the iPhone rather than packaging a lot of existing ideas in a shiny box... but that was myyyy shiny box!).

I know what you mean. I wrote this epic story about a young lad who discovers he's from another world when he meets an wise old man who reintroduces him to his heritage. The lad travels with the wise old man to his world of birth, having many adventures along the way before he faces off against an ultimate evil, defeats the baddie and has the make a choice about whether he wants to go home or stay in this rediscovered world where he is a hero.
