As a companion thread to the 1000 mile challenge :D

I've lost two - three upcoming - with the second nail on the left foot currently undergoing a very painful, emotional week-long separation process. I've already equalled my 2009 total

lol, I currently have 6 remaining. Last year when I was spending a lot of time in Bridal shops the assistants kept encouraging me to try on loads of strappy sandals. Some looked very ill when I explained the likely hood of me having a full set of toenails on my wedding day was next to zero.

not one, never have lost one. Do some people just not lose them?

I've lost one but that's because of a ping pong table collapsing on my toe. I've never has a toenail related injury from running...do you guys clip your nails regularly or has it got something to do with running style/footwear?

Of the 4 I'm missing at the moment two were lost in the Connemara100. My own fault. I have been hyper-vigilant on footcare in the marathon des sables and was just too blasé in Connemara. They'r about half way back now but still looking a little dodgy. The other two were lost in the Rontegenlauf ultra that I did the day before the Dublin marathon. It was extremely hilly (aka up a f****** mountain!) and the downhill sectons gave my toes a battering. Took ages for them to fall off so only just starting to regrow now.

Never lost one thankfully. Have had them slice into the neighbouring toe too many times to count though.

Used to lose the next one down from big toe on right foot constantly until I started using the lacing technique that holds the ankle in place.
Prevents the forefoot moving about in the toebox.
Haven't had a black toenail in the 8 or so months since I've done this.

Not lost any toenails but have noticed the toes themselves looking a bit stumpier than when I started
The fleshy tips of the second toes get an awful battering
Also got that whole slicing into neighbouring toe before - not nice

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,365 ✭✭✭hunnymonster

my problem with the lacing and correct fitting shoes is that it feels uncomfortable. I like my toes to feel free. The lost toenails are the compromise I make to enjoying the feel of my feet running

Not that simple. If your running style creates a lot of forward push on your foot as you land then correctly fitting shoes are no real help. The ankle tying method often solves this one.

Then there's toe alignment. One either foot most people can draw a line from the front of their big toe to the front of their small toe on and each of the intervening toes just touch that line. However, it is reasonably common for the second toe (the one beside the big one) to project beyond that line. In other words that second toe all alone bangs into the front of the shoe on each stride. Hence the toe scrunch and the regularly departing nails.

But hey, apparently that second projecting toe is the sign of a strong leader. So it's not all bloody socks and closed-toe wedding shoes ;)

So buy proper fitting shoes and run proerly then?

After almost 15000 miles in 6 years I still have a full set of toenails. And since lost toenails are one of the signs of being a Real Runner, I still have to wait until I can join that club.

... and have the projecting toes surgically shortened? Got it :)

In the 20 years I've ran/raced I had never lost a toe nail until 2 weeks ago. The damage was done back in early December during the Dublin intermediates in Tymon park. Coming down a steep hill put a lot of pressure of my 2 second toes and one has since departed.

Nail I hope and not the toe .

Since i've moved from sissy mileage to longer stuff, my 2 second toe nails are starting to go black, plus I've got Morton's syndrome? (2nd toe longer than the big toe)

Ha. Yeah just the toenail. I got it on my duvet and it whipped it right off. Was quite sore now I think of it.

When I originally got the blood blisters under the nails the pressure was so great it drove me nuts. I woke from my sleep and took a needle to both toenails. That was also quite painful. I'd say 2-3 mls of blood was released from both but the relief was orgasmic :D

you're all set to do the MDS roadrunner :-) just throw some grit in there next time you release the pressure for the full experience

    haha i have that to:)
Everyone in my family has it actually. Im always losing the toenails on my 2nd biggest toe because of it:p

I lost my first yesterday, small toenail on my left foot.
It went black the day after Dublin last year and just fell off yesterday with no warning...thought it was going to be painful but its not at all.

My right foot is a bit battered as its a half size bigger than my left and the 2nd toenail was thick and black for years but now seems to be growing properly from the base and therefore everytime i have mini surgery on it,i seem to be reducing the thickness...you never know i might have a proper nail in 12 months...these things take time !
My little toenail on my right gets squashed about and is a bit distorted and thick also...but not near as bad as my 2nd toenail.

Never spoke at length about my stunning nails before....feels strange !

Ive never lost any to running. Have lost a few from football alright. Then again ive only done two marathons and standard and sprint distance tri/duathlons

Lost my first nail from running just after the inters XC back in November. The scary part was I lost nearly all the skin on the top of my toe too. Mostly due to hills and runing through lakes. Horrible black looking toe.. but back to normal now.

Have lost 2 this year. The nails on both my second toes. And tops of both toes are constantly badly damaged.. When the first nail went really black, i went to the doctor.. To my surprise and delight she proceeded to treat it, with a paper clip and a lighter... Unusual and not really pleasant sensation having a paper clip through the toe nail.. But as said above, the relief was close to orgasmic.....

Lost three while training for my last marathon and similar to RR had a painful duvet experience with one of them. I'm saving up to get this done before I start another training programme ;):

Thought I lost 2 after DCM last year, but my toenails survived it. All 10 present and accounted for at the moment.

    One. My big toe nail.

Both big toe nails take it in turns to fall out, grow again and then fall out again. This is not all related to running but hill running would be a factor.

Got a hold of one of those Ped Egg jobbies and done a little gardening on my second toes, reckon I've an extra 2mm to spare now ;), I'd say you'd need to be carefull with those bad boys or I could end up a size 9 instead of a 10 .

eeeugh, I know what you mean though. Swimming with a loose toenail is a very funny sensation. water where water doesn't normally go.

Lost two after DCM 2012, on the way back to the car after the race I thought they were two small stones in either shoe and thought it was a sign of luck and made a point to do the lotto.

Getting ready for a shower after the race and taking off my socks I realised it was two toe nails.

safe to say I didnt win the lotto!

Somebody stood on my foot at a gig in a local pub around a month before the Cork marathon which then finished off one injured nail. It's never really recovered so tends to part company with me after each marathon since :(

one black nail from DCM 12. My first nail casualty i think. Not sore though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,054 ✭✭✭theboyblunder

You are all amateurs :) Id post a photo of my feet but there are public decency laws.

Id say some of the ultra guys cant remember what toenails look like

(probably ate them en route somewhere)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,148 ✭✭✭rom

Shoes got wet from water in DCM, toenail lifted. Pealed it off like a bandaid the following day, no nail under. Put Tea tree oil on it for a few days and it was fine. When they start I just peal them off to be done with them. You should see the Blackwater 135 doc and see wat bad feet look like. Highlight burting a blister that it sprays 3 feet in the air.

One so far, and about to loose same one for 2nd time I'd imagine in next week or so, 2nd toe from big toe similar to most here

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,883 ✭✭✭Younganne

Im constantly losing toenails, how silly of me. It's a regular occurance for me!! I haven't had a full, unbruised set of 10 for a few years now!!

Sept i got my right big toenail fully grown back after DCM2011, the left one is almost there...until....DCM 2012, blisters under 8 toenails, I could feel them lifting from mile 23 on...ouch!! They are all black now, some will fall off, some will be fine...

the only 2 toenails i have never lost or got blackened are the 2 little toes. I have tried various brands of runners so it must be the way i run!!!:o
