UPC DVR - Tv Planner keeps deleting

Recently got a second dvr for the house and ìts really starting to p*ss me off. Twice in the space of five days my tv planner has vanished. I read in a different thread its to do with the boxes being updated, but that doesn't explain why my other dvr never suffered this problem. Both the same black thomson dvr. I'll look into getting them to replace it but want to know do all UPC boxes have this problem?

Does anyone with the big silver dvr or the HD box have this problem?

I have the silver one. I had problems with it 18 months ago wiping everything off the planner but it stopped. The problem re-surfaced a few weeks ago - it seemed to go into update mode on a Tuesday evening and wipe anything. Sometimes the programmes re-appeared. It seems to alternate between wiping programmes I record from the Guide - you know where you ask it to record 'This Episode' or 'All Episodes' or the 'Set Repeat Recording'.

Nothing happened Tuesday just gone so hopefully it's stopped again.

I think the solution involves UPC wiping your box and as I've got a back log of stuff I don't want to lose I haven't been in touch with them yet.

But yes, you're right it's VERY annoying.

Are you talking about series link recordings vanishing off the planner? This happened a few times as they seemed to frequently break the series link function (maybe only on certain channels), but I haven't had too much trouble recently. I have a silver Thomson "Mediabox"

I have a number of programmes set up as Series Links and others where I key in the Channel - Time - Day - Frequency etc. If things go wrong it's usually everything on the planner gets wiped but sometimes it just wipes all the Series Links programmes and other times the ones I program in.

I also have the problem where if I am fast forwarding through the programme and then press play sound and picture are slightly out of sync, usually pressing pause then play again sorts it out. Very annoying but as I said the solution may involve losing everything I have stored. I must arrange a lazy weekend where I catch up with everything and get UPC out to sort it out. But of course that involves dealing with UPC and in my experience, that is never a good thing. :o

Can't say I've experienced the problem of everything in the planner disappearing. Do you unplug the DVR overnight?

I often get this too. What I find more annoying is when you try to rewind to a certain point and when you press play it will skip forward several seconds.

Just want to say I am experiencing all of these problems.

Planner keeps deleting, sound synch etc.

Would love to know why. I have heard it doesn't happen on the silver box but I paid for a working box regardless of the colour or type.

I have the Silver DVR box and over the last few weeks it has been getting software updates at unusual times and then of course the planner is wiped.... getting about 3 updates a week . Phoned yesterday and they are coming to take it away ... stalled them for a week and a half to watch what is on it first .

So its not just the black box then. Anyone with the HD box having these problems?

Rang UPC about this during the week, it's a bug alright. They don't have a fix for it, they told me it seemed to only affect flat screen tv's but I don't see the link there myself. Anyway, they have logged it with their own technical team to look into but it might be a few weeks before they figure out what it is and a fix. It seems to affect both the standard and hd boxes.

They really talk some bull some times. How could it have anything to do with what telly you have?!!

Well considering the problem seems to be around since day one that the boxes became available I don't think a fix will be coming any day soon.

What I don't get is why its not happening to every box. Surely the same update would affect two of the same boxes in the same way?

Maybe it only happens under certain usage conditions?

What do people here do with regards to power? Do you leave it on all the time, put it in standby when not in use, or even unplug it overnight? How much do you record? How much is the DVR used? Etc.

You might be on to something there, I have mine plugged into an extension lead. I might try it directly into a wall socket and see if it sorts the problem.

Never plug mine out, put it into standby most nights. I had about 10 shows series linked but they wouldn't all be for one particular day so it should be able to cope with the load. Its in the bedroom so it doesn't get that much use, maybe 2 hours a day max.

Just a thought but maybe its to do with signal strength. Mine is about a steady 70%. Could a few other people post their results see if any patterns arise?

I don't get any such problems I must admit. Mine gets left in standby all the time, mainly because I have all kinds of stuff set to series link record that sometimes clashes with other recordings but gets picked up in the wee hours of the morning sometimes. I can imagine that just slamming the off switch on the wall or extension lead might lead to some disk corruption alright. Signal strength for me also hovers around the 70% region, depending on which TSID it is. I regularly watch stuff I've recorded, and never keep anything I've already watched, so the disk is never much more than about 10% full.

Mains power isn't affected by such things, unless maybe your extension lead is a mile long? :)

    It's about 5ft! :)
For the third time in a week it has now forgotten my tv planner. Time to see if a replacement will help I suppose.

Not much point in having a PVR that loses your settings....

Is it forgetting your tv planner or is it getting constant updates like mine is ?

I know they say it updates when put into standby but how do you actually now when its happening? Software version is 3.8.0.692, always has been I think.

I leave it on all the time , so when I get up in the morning and it is off then there has been one of these "phantom" updates . Plus it happens during the evening too while we are watching tv .

I had that for a while with my silver Thompson DVR. They replaced it and it hasn't given me any bother since.

Never had it update while I was watching telly. Quite often when in standby it will make an eary sound that sounds like a tape being rewound back. I presume this is the hard drive. While this is happening the display will go blank and come back a few seconds later with the time set to 00:00.
Is that it updating? Or just fully going into standby mode?

Any of the Upc staff know if this will be fixed with the implementation of the new epg?

I've had the same problem for over a year. Deletes at least once a month. Called and they replaced the box 2 weeks ago. It has deleted twice since then.

I notice that often it happens when I am away for a few days. So maybe having the box in standby for long periods of time causes the extra software updates?

I'm calling and demanding a credit. What good is a PVR if it doesn't record.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,638 ✭✭✭zilog_jones

The software updates are not that frequent, there's only one every few months or so. I've never seen anything from the planner deleted since we got our DVR. Do you ever unplug the DVR? Would you have a large number of recordings set?

I've been having the same problem. My box is plugged directly into the wall and it's not a flatscreen. Some times the box is on standby and some times it's not. It happens on three separate boxes in the same house as well. It's really frustrating, especially as UPC doesn't have a decent search function.

Just a thought but does everyone that is experiencing these problems have multiroom?

I had the same problem, don't have multi room. Went away on holidays a week ago - set the planner for the week away, first 2 days stuff were taped then nothing afterwards. Boy was I p*ssed when I missed the finale to 24 and sky for once were not reshowing it!!! I have a silver box.

Just got the Digital + box and everything is going fine, however can someone please tell me how to enable it to display all the times (other showings) a particular programe is being shown in the next 7 days. I came accross it yesterday and thought it was a good idea but can't find it now. Wanted to check when the MTV Awards are next on after the 9pm showing tonight. Cheers.:)
