Hi, Via a contact in Port Elizabeth I'm looking at importing a large amount of
Souvenirs /arts of craft from South Africa. Can anyone give me some info on the following:

    Likely problems / restrictions
    customs
    Vat & excess duty
transport (20 ft container) costs .

Any info would be much appreciated.

    Hello Leon76,

I am a freight forwarder and would be able to assist with some of your questions.

Please find attached a document that you may find helpful for imports and exports and give you a broad outline of some of the area's you need to be aware of.

I would first of all need to classify the products you intend to import from a customs point of view. That would determine what the rate of duty would be. I would need to know a bit more about the products to be able to do that. Feel free to e-mail or PM me with more details.

There is unlikely to be excise duty involved, but you would have to pay 21% VAT at the time of importation. If you are a VAT registered business, the VAT you pay at time of importation is reclaimable through your VAT return. If the import is for your own use, the VAT can not be claimed back.

I can source rates for 20' containers from Port Elisabeth to Dublin or Cork.

Let me know if I can be of any further assistance

    Best regards,
    Rudolf289
