Inserting a plug-in link for pdf on site

Can anyone tell me how to insert a plug in on a website? I'm trying to make it so that someone opening a .pdf file (or anyother for that matter) would get a link/reference to Adobe (or such) if they didn't have a pdf reader.

    Is it automatic?

    Thanks
