TOW BAR on a Smart Car

Hey. Saw a smart car with a trailer on the back of it, and thought to myself, thats a great way of saving money, but what about the towing capacity!?

I have a kia picanto for work and an old beetle for pleasure and there have been times when I could have really used a car with a towbar to bring the beetle places. I have had it in my mind to buy a cheap car with a towbar but when I saw the smart and the trailer I just thought, why not put a towbar on the picanto!?

The manufacturers pulling capacity, does this actually mean anything or could the picanto actually manage to pull an old beetle, on a towing frame. OK, I know all the legalities behind towing frames, but would it work, clutch wear aside, would the balance of the car be ok and the braking especially in the wet?

    Anyone got any info? Thanks.DSC01407.jpg

    according to this
    http://www.alle-autos-in.de/kia/kia_picanto_11_start_ktc3210.shtml
it has a towing capacity (braked) of 700 kg ...so no towing of beetles of the wheeled variety

Trying to think how it's a great way of saving money! Is it pay road tax and insurance on a small car and put passengers in a trailer/caravan?

To even consider towing a car with a little picanto suggests to me you shouldnt really have a driving licence. Even if it was physically capable of actually towing it without doing it damage, the weights just could never make sense.

On some cars like the ford Ka I think you're not allowed to fit a towbar.

A tow bar on a Smart car is only good for towing around those advertising boards - you'd often see 3 Smart cars w/ trailer and adverts, in a row (to catch your attention)
