Wireless problems (Eircom)

Since I got my mac, I've been having problems with the wireless internet in my house. We're with Eircom, and have a Netopia router (about 5 years old now). Often the internet just goes off, and I can't get it to work again unless I switch the router off and back on. I never had this problem with my Vaio - the internet would stop working occasionally, but the diagnostics almost always fixed it with just getting new IP settings or something. I'd noticed before that this seemed to happen when my OH was here and using his Macbook too. Is this a known problem? Is there anything I can do, settings I can change on the Macbook, that might remedy this? Or a way to fix it when the internet cuts out without turning off the router?

Yeah, I've tried that. It cut out again several times yesterday and the router had to be restarted. It's really frustrating now!

Try updating the router's firmware - if it is more than a few years old, it will have an old version loaded.

In the router's own interface, you'll see an 'Update Router' link on the left, which provides a link to a webpage with firmware for all models of the Netopia routers. Here's the actual link it provides: http://www.netopia.com/support/intl/eircom/firmwareN.html

If using the Mac to do the upgrade, be sure to save the download to a shared folder (Your user's Public folder), or the router won't be able to see/use the file you download.

    Hi,
I dont think your problem is due to your mac. I have a MBP and have eircom broadband, I previously had an iBook, and my dad has a desktop PC, we have had problems such as yours with all our computers. The fault is nothing to do with the internet settings its due to the eircom modem, we have contacted them about it and their only solution was to turn it off and then turn it back on again. Always solves the problem but I agree with you, it is very annoying.
