Was wondering who would the best airline be to travel to Jo'burg? I would welcome any comments?

I went with South African Airways via London Heathrow and they were pretty good, your own personal tv in the headrest and a good choice of tv/movies. Food was grand as airline food goes and the staff were pretty attentive, plenty snacks and drinks going around the whole time.

Virgin Atlantic also fly there and I thought they were pretty decent (apart from the fact it took over two hours to switch the entertainment on - probably just that flight).

I think once you've a decent choice of entertainment you're set, always a bit cramped in economy on such a long flight, pity the upgrade is prohibitively expensive.

Whatever's cheapest provided they have decent in flight entertainment is the way to go. All the airline websites should tell you what planes have what.

There is a large number of airlines flying to Jo'burg, and the inflight experience is broadly similar for all of them. For me, the key factors in deciding are cost, where you connect through, given you can't fly directly from Ireland and if you can buy everything on the one ticket from Ireland, or if you have to buy a ticket to the airlines hub separately.

Flights through the middle east are normally cheaper, but flying time is longer. You could try Ethiad, Emirates, Turkish Airlines. Flying with Emirates involves two changes, somewhere in the UK and in Dubai as well.

There are lots of airlines flying from Europe too. Off the top of my head, British Airways, Virgin, SAA, Air France, KLM, Lufthansa, Iberia, Swiss Air all fly to Jo'burg, there might be more.

South African Airways and BMI are both Stat Alliance members, so you might be able to get a through ticket with them, SAA go from T1 at Heathrow as well so connecting would be easier than BA or Virgin.
