Don't know anything about Osaka. I was in Tokyo and a few other places allright. Stayed in cheap hotels. Beer can be expensive enough in places, food not too bad. Karaoke bars are great craic, you will probably be encouraged to go up and sing.
    Osaka info here.

Its a cheap and cheerful Japanese style hotel. Not a bad location, just beside a subway, easy access to the city, and not far from a JR rail station, access to Kyoto, Nara and Kobe.

Visa's to Japan are just a standard holiday type, your given a form on the flight over to fill out, when you land and get to customs they'll stamp the visa in your passport.

When I went, I booked flights through clubtravel.ie, flight were with Air France, no complaints! Might be cheaper to fly with JAL.

If your looking to travel to a few cities, you should look into a 'Japan Rail Pass', can be purchased from trailfinders, around 230euro's for a weeks pass, this will cover most train services, included the 'bullet train'!!

Others tips....leave the jumpers and jackets at home, cause in August, its really really really hot and humid!!!
