Hi guys, I'm thinking of replacing my helmet. When I bought it, 'twas grand fitting now it just looks massive since I lost weight plus I've had it for a while. I'm probably going to order online but I'd like to know how do I measure how big a head I've got? Has anyone here got a helmet over the net, how's the sizing? I'll probably be getting this helmet to match the club jersey:

Does anyone have one of these? Is it comfortable?

Measuring tape around the head but bear in mind that helmets can just tend to look big. I don't think losing weight would actually change your head size much.

All Bell helmets have similar fit in my experience. I've found Bells very comfy, but I wouldn't get a Bell if you want something that looks small - the internal cradle is quite floaty so they tend to look a bit mushroomy in the larger sizes.

Helmets are one item I would not buy without trying on first -says he who bought cycling shoes without ever trying them on. But helmets, from my experience, can have quite different shapes depending on the manufacturer.

Having said that, you could buy and return cheaply enough if you order from CRC.

I'd tend to agree with Lumen there. I have a Bell helmet (I think the same as your pic) and find it very comfortable. Looks a bit mushroomy from the front. Personally I think Giro's look better. Or what about those ones Cervello team wear - they look like some kind of imperial fighter pilots from star wars - eh, in a good way.

    :D Crumliniano.

I use a Bell Sweep & have always found it very comfortable...and sometimes thought 'man that looks feckin big on me head' but I used to have a Met Stradivarius & it looked huge compared to the Bell.
You have to remember a helmet isn't 'part of your head' all day so its bound to look a bit mushroom-y when you see the reflection in the back door as you prepare to mount up.
And yeah, I think trying it on for size & comfort is advisable. And the look...of course.

One time, about 5 years ago, in Cycleways, I had helmet sizing explained to me thus:
    - Giro and Bell use rounder moulds
    - Specialized use narrower, longer moulds

This seemed to make sense when I fitted them on. A large Giro or Bell would fit but would be too wide at the sides - basically, to get a circumferance to fit the widest part of my head - front to back - it was way too big and mushroomy at the sides. A large Specialized was a much snugger fit but I didn't fancy them aesthetically.

I ended up with a Limar which I would highly recommend for comfort and for reducing my similarity to that Mario Kart character shaped like a mushroom.

I use a Bell helmet and they are quite a large fitting helmet. I have a long head! and find that Bell is one of the few helmets that can accommodate my peculiarity! It is very comfortable

    Limar Pro here also.

If you get one you might want to peel off the words "Worlds Lightest Helmet" emblazed along the side of it!

I too have a Limar Pro "The Worlds Lightest Helmet" but I actually wouldn't get one again. I don't think it's very comfy, light yes, comfy no.

+1 for the Bell Sweep. Took me ages to find a helmet that comfortably fitted the bump at the back of my head. Someone posted a nice looking Irish Flag Spuik a while back, they're in stock in Wheelworx in Fonthill in case of interest. Dont know price.

Regardless of size they seem to be shaped differently inside. I had to go through a bunch of them till I found a comfy one.

I ordered the Bell from Cycle Super Store, €69. I think I should be honest about why I purchased it, it's nothing to do with looking like a mushroom but there's an impending date with a photographer from the local rag and I want to look as euro as I can. I always thought it would be nice to have a second helmet though instead of putting back on the same smelly helmet I'd been training in, I can create another 100 reasons to justify this purchase.
