How do people find the Skycaddie GPS Units? Thinking of getting one, or are there better alternatives out there?

I see Golf Store Europe have two in their range one at €225 and the other €338

    Cheers in advance,

Might do similar but I’d say the SGX would be mega expensive when it comes out, looks real fancy.

The SG2.5 and SG5 don’t seem to be that different, apart from the SG5 having colour, not sure if that merits the extra cash...

Used one yesterday for the first time, the SG5. Very good piece of kit, would definitely recommend one.

Bought a SkyCaddie 2.5 last Oct but I lost or had it stolen from car after my round in Ballinrobe G.C.Co. Mayo last Thursday.
To date it has not been recovered. My son has a SkyCaddie SG 5 model which I am using as he is abroad for some time. It is way superior to my black and white model with a lot more features and benefits. The Mark Ball feature tells you how far your hitting your shots which will give a lot of confidence as the season gets underway.
My advice is to get SG 5 model. Golfsmiths in USA = €285. after dollar conversion. I wrote to my club committee in Mayo last Nov seeking a new local rule permitting the use of a distance measuring device in my club . I got it passed so I can now use it during our club completions from 2010 onwards.

Given SC2 for christmas, used it in three competitions since and have won all three competitions.

Knowing the distances to the backs of greens is invaluable and gives you great confidence to commit to the shot.

agree with other posters get the sg5 lots more features !! I have one the last 8 months or so and was originally reluctant to purchase one but it is invaluable. I tend not to use it in my club all the time as obviously I know it but playing for club teams I tend to play the away games and a lot of times its on courses I havent played, so on the practice games i use them at gives me all the info etc I need.

you cant go wrong with one but spend the extra and go the sg5

Thats interesting and good to know.

I see in golfsmith they have the SGX for relase in March at just a little more than the SG5, although i didn't want to spend too much if i am going to splash the cash I might aswell go all out!

What's the story with the Skycaddie???? I mean do these things come preloaded with Irish courses etc or do you have to input your home course in to them???? Play out of Wexford and I think I would be interested in one of these.

Theres an annual subscription fee £35 stg and you can download any available mapped course after that. dependind on your machine yu can store up to 10 courses at a time for use but others can be easily added and removed on the system

Sounds like a good piece of kit so.......I think I would be interested in one.....even if club mightnt allow it during competitive play would still be a good tool for casual golf. Thanks United.

Suggest you have a look at "Golf Buddy" - can store up to 20,000 courses, no annual subscriptions and no additional downloading everytime you play away courses. Have mine 6 months and think it is worth every penny. Keeps stats on all courses you play and you don't have to be a computer nerd to link it up with a computer. Link attached. Expensive here and in UK but check out price on website and on other US websites where it is after dropping about 20% in price recently. Also being promoted by golf Proshops. http://www.golfbuddyglobal.com/

I ended up getting the Sky Caddie SG5. Yes I find it handy however after a few rounds on the my home course I find I dont use that much any more, but undoubtly handy to have. On new courses its of great use but it can get annoying when you have to fiddle around with it in between shots, sometimes I cant be bothered. I'd say the SG4 is more or less the same as the SG5 but without the colour, no big deal. The price there seems very good.

Pretty much as Jimjo has articulated ^^^ Very handy for away courses, you don't need to look at it much on home course. There is a lot going on on the S5 screen so all I ever look at really is yardage to hole

Do any golf GPS devices have a facility where you can program it to tell you the club and swing type to apply based on the distance to the pin, lay up area etc? I have a simple laser rangefinder, and have used it on the driving range on a calm day (no wind) to work out the average distance I can achieve for every club based on full swings for all clubs, and then 3/4, 1/2 and 1/4 swings (AKA the clockface routine) for PW, SW and LW approach shots. Hence I have roughly 20 distances written down on a piece of paper which i need to refer to on numerous occasions during a round (its impossible to memorise them all!). Obviously I also have to factor wind into the equation before choosing an appropriate club and swing.

If any of these GPS devices had some sort of programable facility, it would mean I would only have to refer to this device, and not be wasting time referring to both the GPS unit and then my notebook...

    cheers

Thanks 1916. From reading that thread, it appears that it will remember how long you hit with each club which is grand. However it doesn't appear to have a facility where it will remember distances depending on how far back you swing each club....
