I have a ball coming up on Saturday? Is wearing a hankerchief in my breast pocket naff? Also what would be the best style?

    I always wear pocket squares.

There are numerous ways of wearing or folding them, some very plain and symmetrical, others extremely flamboyant. A search on the internetz for 'Pocket Squares' will give you quick results.

As for colour then it's really what you want. Classic white will never be out of place. One to match the lining of your jacket is always good. Matching one to your tie is recommended.

Wearing something very loud, with polkadots, and stripes, and checks, in 6 colours, and two textures is fun, but it really depends on the occasion.

One last point. If you have gone to the trouble of doing some ornate origami on your pocket square then you really don't want to ruin it by having to blow your nose on it so always carry a spare handkerchief in your pocket.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

If it's his first time donning a square then I'd suggest white is definitely the way to go. Very hard to go wrong, especially with a simple TV fold.

I would, however, respectfully disagree re. matching square to tie precisely; it's a little strained. Suggest instead that having the pocket square echo some other element from shirt, suit or tie (e.g. the colour of a stripe) is more subtley effective.

Lastly, the tip regarding the spare hankie in the inside pocket is absolutely vital! :)
