Buying a blu ray player

I have a PS3 that doubles up as a blu ray player. However I've been reading articles that state that constant running of the blu ray laser during movie playback shortens the life of the console. So I was thinking about getting a dedicated blu ray player and just use the PS3 for gaming. Or is that wasting my hard earned? The PS3 has performed flawlessly to date, 2 1/2 years old now, but as I like my movies, would a dedicated blu ray player, connected up to my a/v amp give me better sound and picture?
