i bought a car from a dublin dealer in late october last. this came with a six month warranty as standard. both keys were broken(Clip thingy) but didn't notice til i got home to galway and now the bearings or what i think is the bearings are starting to go. i presume the warranty covers both of these issues??? dealer very slow to return calls. come to think of it they don't return my calls. warranty up at the end of march. they'd hardly try to fob me off til then. any idea on the cost involved to fix the problems. Volvo s40 2005
    thanks

Well to be honest, if it wasn't a main dealer then the warrenty would only really cover gearbox an engine, the key/fobs are down to wear and tear(assuming they're now 5 years old) you may get the bearing done after harrasing them.

no it wasn't a main dealer. but surely they can't get away with giving me two broken keys that you can't even attach to a keyring (without a ball of sellotape) after paying good money for a car.

Well it Not beig a main dealer I'd say all you've got is a engine an gearbox warrenty. And with the sales of second had cars, the dealer/sales are only obliged to sell keys on as they get them, so if someone sold it to them with one key, they only have to sell it with one, this may have been something you took up with them before you were about to buy they car, as you may or May not know, spare keys for cars are not cheap, they go into the hundreds.

i know 300/400 euro approx. thats kinda s**t though that they can sell you on something thats broken. i'm going to pester them anyway over the coming weeks to see if i get anywhere!!

Do you have anything in writing about the warranty?

What's the actual problem with the key, other than the keyring attachment not working?

Yea keys are a touchy suitation.. I understand that you only seen then when you got home.. But did you get a good deal on your cars though? Like they could have only made 300/400 profit on a car that's been sitting there 9 months..

problem with the keys is - the clip on the plastic cover over the actually key is broken. so when i attached my new car key to my keyring when i got home the black plastic cover hit the floor. loads of sellotape now keeps the whole lot together. same story with the spare key

regarding the deal. i paid 13000 in full on the day for a 05 2.0 D with 40,000 miles.

If the chip and blade work OK, is it not just a case of getting a new cover / container for the key, rather than getting new ones cut & coded?

sadly eoin its not. i rang the local volvo dealer in galway and they said they would have to be recoded and all that mullarky!!!!!

you'd buy alot of sellotape for 400 euro:)

It probably depends on the wording of the warranty. Could you name the dealer?? I'd love to see if it was the same guy as gave me "full mechanical warranty including engine and gearbox"

Does anyone know if this would cover exhausts etc?

    Not Your Ornery Onager

Never mind the keys - tell us about the bearings, and why you think they are 'starting to go'.

Warranty will only cover an actual failure and so unless you can prove that the bearings have/ are about to immediately fail, you don't have much of a case.

Have you had an independent engineers report on the car since you bought it ? It may be worth getting a proper assessment if you're thinking of going back to them. If I was seriously worried about the bearings, I'll also consider about getting an oil sample done which may be able to tell you if you really do have a problem.

Finally, (but do it first) ask the dealer for a copy of the warranty certificate which should give you a good indication of the covered components.

Can anyone tell me if a engine and gearbox warranty covers a new clutch & possible problem with injectors on a peugeot 407:confused:

Maybe this is off topic, or indeed not my place to say it, but I would not expect both keys of a car to be in that condition if it had only done 40,000 miles, same with the bearings...unless both happen to be a known weak point in that particular model.

Clutch would not be covered under any second hand car waranty. You would have to elaborate on "possible" injector problems. Used car warranties are usualy only if things actually break down. Diagnosis of an intermittant problem would not be covered.

As for they volvo keys, You have no hope of getting the dealer to pay vovo €400 just because a bit of plastic is broken!

Can you super glue or plastic weld a new piece to the keys to get then to stay on your keyring?

Which bearings do you think are going? Wheel bearings won't be covered as the dealer has no idea what type of roads you drive on or how sympathetic a driver you are.

Your keys could be broken into tiny little bits before its even seen 10km never mind 40k km. Keys aren't as strong as people think they should be, they're only plastic, not carbon fibre. How many times were they dropped, thrown on the counter after a bad day or bashed off the ground by a young child playing with them, how heavy was eveything else attached to the key, this would put extra stress on the key while its in the ignition. The people that don't know the true value of a key will never handle them with care. I'm not saying they ahve to be wrapped in bubble wrap but they defo don't need abuse.

As for the bearings, this will depend on the dealer if he covers them under his warranty or not. They are an item that suffers "wear and tear". So best to ring and ask.

Or new car warranty... Some people will get 100k km or more out of a clutch others will get 50k km and some will only manage to get 10km or less. All depends on the driver and how they operate their vehicle.

All that said, if something else failed like a release bearing and it effects the clutch parts then it might be covered.

Probably not as the clutch is seen as a consumable and the fuel injectors are probably due to dirty fuel.

Lads, the answers to all these questions will be in the warranty documentation that came with the car.
