satellite to watch the cycling

ok. Probably a bit ott of an idea but I'm considering getting a satellite + motor so I can watch some of the cycling this year. I figure it's cheaper and more flexible than getting a TV subscription. I'd also get BBC/UTV etc which I currently don't have (rabbit's ears)

Anyone have a similar setup or is it all Eurosport subscriptions? The price of getting a Eurosport subscription is quite expensive here as it seems to be bundled with SkySports.

Down to what though? According to their website the cheapest sports package is €54/month. Not worth it imho

Believe it or not some people just don't bother with subscription TV... I'd be in a similar situation, don't have a TV at all but would be interested in the cycling.

@Diarmuid- you know about www.cycling.tv I presume? It's over the internet.

presume you're looking to hotbird for the eurosport and astra 2 for the UK chanels? I've not set up a motor dish myself, but have got some bits from these guys before, fast delivery and good service. It's simple if a bit time consuming to set up the dish, but since you're renting just make sure the landlord is ok with you sticking up a dish, most aren't.
Oh and be sure you get a dish which will handle both beams, they'll have different size requirements

Hi Diarmuid. Are you still living in France or am I mixing you up wth another Boardsie? If you are hop into any of the big hardware stores LeRoy Merlin E LeClerc etc and buy any of their bog standard free to air setups. I bought one for 40 euro (including dish) and you will pick up the Astra sat for free. Just tune the receiver into your favoured language ( the basic usually transmits through German Eurosport but you can pick up Sean and the boys or French etc ) If you have moved back home then Lidl and Maplin do these sats regularly and I have one that cost about €80, picks up German Eurosport (free) and just tune to whatever language you want (check the box to see if it picks up the desired station). In fact you often get longer coverage than British Eurosport! Setting up the dish is pretty easy if you have any DIY skills and don't forget it works from ground level if you have good site of the sky!!

When would you have time to watch it?

I think we have pretty much established you work for say 40 hrs a week, are on boards for another 40 hours plus. You are probably cleaning and maintaining your "stable" of bikes for 4 or 5 hours each week, and riding them for another 40 or so.

Given there are only 168 hours in a week, this leaves you with only around 40 hours for "luxuries" such as sleeping, eating and checking out your next bike and upgrades:)

I ditched my South of France life for the more glamorous surroundings of Rathfarnham.

My boss has it, he's also on boards but doesn't know my new name :D I'll pass you onto him if you like (without passing on my new name to him of course)
