Mention 'Modification' to an insurer...

...and alarm bells start ringing everywhere. I saw it!!

Anyway, I have an '06 Civic, I wanted to add standard Honda front fog lights and the triangular exhausts. I mentioned it to the Insurance lady and I swear I could see the red lights flashing behind her eyes!

So long story short I'm told I should get some sort of cert if I get these modifications put in. Has anyone else had an experience like this?

Moved to "Modified Cars" forum, probably the best forum for this

I mentioned uprated brakes, carbon fiber bits dotted around the car and sports seats.

    Made no change?

95 Civic btw, 18 with full license :)

    Made no change?
How much did it make no change to? By this I mean: is your current insurance high or low?

Quinn don't mind as long as its not a performance upgrade.

I'm sure those "modifications" could be factory options also? Maybe a sports pack or something?

So, if that's the case, asking for a cert is laughable.

you have to be aware that you could be talking to an idiot on the other side of the phone that would have been briefed to red flag the word modification.

I doubt if you explained there non performance upgrades that they would require a cert

I wouldn't bother telling them about the front fogs, sure the triangular "exhausts" aren't even connected to the exhaust are they? aren't they just fake?

There's no way that would affect a claim seeing as they're standard on most specs.

I paid an extra 100 quid to declare my exhaust. I have no idea if it's performance enhansing as it was on the car when I bought it!

Will be handy having it there when I modify further

What actually happened was a face-to-face conversation with the insurerladyperson, I mentioned 'I want to add some modificatons to my car, nothing performance-related, just standard Honda Exhausts and front fog lights'

And she gave me a 'Here's another one' look. She warned me to be careful and mentioned that I'd need a form or something. That part I wasn't clear on at all, it was something along the lines of needing a form to confirm that the modifications didn't damage the car. I don't know, it didn't seem to make any sense.

I've already renewed the insurance so I could probably go back and ask for clarification. It's annoying, and frankly frustrating being told I need certs/forms to even touch the car. It's my damned car, not theirs!
