SEI Grants

Have looked through board and see quite a lot of direction to people like myself to apply for SEI grant (wall, roof and possible boiler upgrade in my case). Just wondering what is the success rate of getting grant approval, seems a relatively easy process anyway to apply. Any feedback greatly appreciated!
    Cheers

The grant approval is instantaneous as long as the house was built before 2006.

You'll get an approval email after you submit the application

Im looking into this for my sister-in-law, her house is always cold no matter how much heat is on. Built in 1996, (we think there was a botch job done when insulation the cavity walls?)

I see there is a HALO scheme on the ESB website, they will assess your home free of charge and give you a full list of their recommendations.

I wonder would it be worth while doing this first, and using their findings, apply for the SEI grants required?

From what I've heard Halo won't comment on insulation although the person that visits might be able to give an unofficial (off the record) recommendation.

The SEI grants provide for a before and after BER assessment - so if you go with the insulation grants you get your costs back on the assessments.

Its all fairly painless. I made an application online and had written approval emailed to me within a couple of hours. After the works were completed I submitted the relevant documents and had the grant paid into my bank account about a month later.

RVR the 200 euro grant wouldn't cover the total cost of doing a before and after BER Cert, SEI take 60 for publication fees for two certs so it would normally cost a bit more but you would benifit from independant advice which is useful in pointing you in the right direction.

    From the ESB website --->

The HALO survey is free and simply makes recommendations on the areas in your home where you could improve your energy efficiency.
The survey will assess the energy efficiency of all of your current insulation, heating and lighting systems inside and outside of your home.
Afterward, the surveyor will supply you with a comprehensive report with specific recommendations on making your home more energy-efficient along with relevant cost estimates.

To me this sounds like a free BER ?
You could use their report and apply for SEI grants based on it ?

Firstly you do not get a BER cert from the Halo scheme so its not a free BER.

You do get someone who looks at your house and makes reccomendations to improve the energy efficency, as I don't know much about the halo scheme I can't really comment on how good the quality of the advice is so I've applied for a free inspection and will copmpare it to my own BER survey's, That should be fun!!! I will let you all know how it compares. :D

It will be interesting to see the comparisons.

    Ali,
neither a HALO or a BER will tell you where the house is really losing heat or whether the wall insulation was botched. Neither of these surveys do any quantitative testing on your house. IMO waht you need is something like a heat loss survey where your house is actually tested for the significant heat loss mechanisms. Google "Heat Loss Survey" or something similar for more info. There are several websites with a loads of info out there.

Your ESB account number has to be given so if nothing else it can be traced back to see when the connection was made.

You beat me to the reply there Muffler.

As an aside, I wonder what would happen if you were actually living off grid until 2006? I wonder what the reply would be :D
