Its not the shocking realisation of the standard of Politics in Ireland that you come away with. Nor is it the actual interview itself which put any Government ff Politician in the same position none other would do any better.
A couple of huge epiphanies came through my shame/disgust. One we HAVE to move on from where we are and move on with almost none of past political culture. What struck as you scramble to recover and try to figure out why are we 'here' how have we got here.
It dawned on me the whole culture we have is almost a carbon copy of the rougher element of the early poor that arrived in New York and became the gangs of New York, the crooked police man, the dishonest politician. Bringing darkness into power where ever it could be found.

Its what we became after our history almost wiped out our self esteem and when in an idealistic 1916 unfortunate war we lost all our genuine leaders. What we have been left with has been the same type of horrors lots of ex colonial countries have experienced in politics and perverts.

The problem there is clearly no media able or intelligent enough to confront what needs to be, to challenge in time what needs to be, to follow up social consequences and there effect on society. We should be in a better position than other countries because we are small. Should be more than able to clean up and challenge our vile elements. Instead we are so overloaded we are in danger of sinking under the rot.

What can we do? Leaving out the gangs we currently have to deal with whether its the upper rot of the civil service or the government or banks. They can all be replaced without the huge welfare entitlements they get now when they leave jobs. It is Welfare if it comes out of this countries budget. And the wages this country cant afford to pay them in that case this is fraud. But its not about them its now about 'us' what can we constructively do? Anything progressive constructive?

    Interview here. (Scofflaw)

The problem I think is that we are so small that every media outlet can be bent to the will of the politicians as they all require something.

In boom times they were all getting lots of advertising from property so had no interest in highlighting the problems or else they were getting license fee increases to keep them happy and not wanting to talk dirty.

I also think Irish media is reactionary and there is little investigative journalism going on or seems to be. Of course with freedom on information requests being so costly which is completely against what should be the case, one can't expect newspapers to throw away money in the hope to find dirt. Being so small, a lot of the talent seems to move to Britain to get better salaries and all we are left with is the crap that can't go anywhere else and the few people who just want to live here fighting against the apathy of the people to get their point across.

    Warning, not for the squeamish.

I think these say as much about Irish journalism as well as Mary.

Very good, he really sticks the boot in on the last video.
You don’t see RTE going in that hard, biting the hand that feeds them and all that.

I’d love to see Jeremy Paxman let loose on Cowen.

It's like Kevin Myers said, we are lead by the sons and daughters of people that failed to get themselves killed in 1916. And you're right, anybody that was smart, fit and capable either emigrated or got shot, thus leaving behind the moral midgets and gombeen men that manage our country.

Lots of commentators praised Sean O'Rourke for his handling of the Willie O'Dea interview on the RTE radio lunchtime news, the mere fact the interview was so lauded suggests how little we see the media really probe a politician so they reveal themselves.

    Watched the last video there.
Didn't see her answering a single question or even addressing a single point.
She just waffled on about bs, gave evasive answers and kept re-interpreting the question into something else.

I don't think I'm detecting the same air of incompetence that others seem to be? Sure, she dodges a few questions (she is a politician), but she fares pretty well compared to Jim Devine.

yeah I thought that too. She is well aware that the guy is only going to be aware of the macroscopic issues affecting the country, so she gives answers that he really doesnt have enough background knowledge to question. He should, however, have picked her up on the issue of the unemployed leaving the country.. she tried to portray it as an opportunity afforded to the youth of the nation by Fianna Fáil.
