Getting an emergency passport

I'm flying with Ryanair to the UK on Saturday March 6th. I've only just booked the flights yesterday, it was a spur of the moment thing. My problem is that my passport has been mislaid (most likely thrown out with the rubbish due to house renovations). So from tomorrow, i have only 10 days to obtain the passport. Only 8 of those are working days. And i still have to check in online to print out my boarding passes, Ryanair normally close the online check-in 12 hours before flight departure.

So my question is, will I be able to get my passport in time? Is it possible to have my application processed in as little as 8 working days provided i show them my flight documentation, etc?

If you visit the passport office, on Molesworth st.
They will process your application in as little as a day. You will also need proof of flight. And there is a fee.

I'm in Munster, so i'll be applying to the Passport office in Cork on South Mall. Is that true though, one day? Seems awful quick. The fee is €55 according to the passport form.

    Hey grenache,

flying with Ryanair to the UK on Saturday March 6th myself. Remembered as I was booking flights last Wed that passport was out of date. Sent it Thurs with the special envelope in the post office and they didn't log it as received until Monday (they say it should be issued by Tues next) so your best bet at this point is probably to go straight to the passport office. Since you say your own is missing that may slow things down....so I'd go asap.

If you are in the Munster region, then to the best of my knowledge you should apply to the Cork office in 1a South Mall Cork. Tel. +353 21 494 4700 or LoCall 1890 426 900. (nobody answers this phone....just a message runinng over and over again:rolleyes:).

    More info below:

    http://www.foreignaffairs.gov.ie/home/index.aspx?id=401

"If you need a passport in less than 10 days you will need to apply in person to the Dublin or Cork Passport office with a completed application and proof of travel, eg internet booking or travel tickets. If you have lost your passport or are a first time applicant you must allow 10 working days for the issue of your passport as all such applications must be thoroughly checked before being approved."

Cost of passport E80 plus E55 I think for late application.

Have two identical passport photos-checked to see that face is of correct size, one signed by a garda and a signed passport witnessed by the guards with you going in I guess-maybe it'll hurry things along.

This is the bit that is worrying me! Surely they'll have me on file and know that i was already granted a passport. How long does it take to check that? Talk about bureaucracy!

I've used the service twice. First time, the asked me to come back to collect another day.
Last time, I applied just before lunch and had it in the evening.

So the first time you used it, how long did you have wait to collect it? This is typical Ryanair! I flew with them last February and they accepted a driving licence. Now they deem it not good enough. Nearly every other airline accepts them

It's not Ryanairs fault that you've lost your passport, and they have now had the requirement for needing a passport for all flights whatever the destination for some time. If you don't have a passport you can still fly to the UK with AerLingus with other forms of ID, or get the boat and need no ID.

Well i went down today to South Mall. Only had to wait for 35 mins. I didn't have to pay the extra 55 euro emergency fee and they will have it for me in seven days, which is perfect. Phew!

@ robinph: i'm not blaming Ryanair for losing my passport. However they really should accept driving licences. If its good enough for Aer Lingus and the Gardai, then surely its good enough for Michael O'Leary and his cronies. There is always a catch with Ryanair, nothing is ever straight forward with them. People like things to be simple and transparent. Its never the case with Ryanair.

At the risk of turning a passport thread into one about Ryanair, they couldn't be more simple and transparent about what they do and what they charge for. It's all clearly stated on their website, and if you don't follow those rules then they will either charge you or you won't travel. Nothing is hidden.

Back to the passport issue though, it's good to know they will sort it out that quickly as I've just had someone else ask me how long it takes to get them sorted.

If it wasn't for Ryanair you wouldn't be booking a flight 'on impulse' because it would cost you a fortune. Aer Lingus and the other carriers had a cosy cartel going for years where they fleeced travellers.

    I can't remember.....that was ten years ago.
They just make sure you have it in time for your flight. Hence the need to produce proof of travel.

Glad you got sorted grenache. Good to know that the hold up is minimal. I don't know if I'll have mine by Fri, at least you have yours now :)

I guess the hold-up with lost passports is because they have to be happy that your passport is genuinely lost and not just sold on for a profit. Seemingly if you lose a couple of them they will only issue one for a much shorter length of time as there would be suspision that you were selling them!

I could also fly with BMI. They fly from Cork to Nottingham East Midlands which is where i'm going. But their flight times dont suit me as i would have to take the Friday off.

@ McConkey: My passport expired in 2005, so they defo couldn't say i was selling it on. The only reason they needed it was so they could clip and cancel it. You should get yours in a week or less. Where are you flying to anyway?
