Hi All, I know there is another thread on here about this and didn't want to hi-jack it. It's been in the news alot this week and I suppose it's kinda made me think about wanting to change things.

I've been bulimic/anorexic for about 10 years now and I'm 26. I've managed to hide it pretty well, apart from in school when some worried friends contacted my parents. My mother brought me to the doctor back then and I was anorexic at the time, I used bulimia as a way hide the anorexia and I suppose I just got really good at hiding it over the years. I won't even begin to list the effects it's had on my life but I want it to end and I don't want to be controlled by this anymore.

I know in theory what I should do, but the thoughts of going to the doctor and saying the words out loud really scares me, I've made a couple of appointments over the years where I planned to tell him and get some help but I always end up chickening out and coming up with some other ailment for my visit.

I suppose what I really want to know is how people go about taking that first step, can I go to a counselor without needing a doctors recommendation? If not how did people work up the courage to approach them.

of course you can go to a counsellor first without a doctors approval...
its understandable that your nervous and find it hard to take that first step.
2% of women in ireland suffer from bulimia, and it can seem like quite a taboo to talk about.
but believe me, there are counsellors, and doctors and trained staff, all qualified and there to support you every step of the way.

best of luck, please make that step

Yoiu dont have to but going to a doctor first might be a good idea. She will probably be able to recommend a good counsellor who is an expert in your particular area.

From my experience of several doctors, I would not recommend going to a GP, unless it is an ED specialist. I've been to various different counselors and the only people who could help me are www.marinotherapycentre.com. The therapists there are recovered so they know what it's like to have an ED so it's nothing to be embarrassed about.

I went to 4 different doctors in 2 different counties. Usually I was just given awful medication and told "everything will sort itself out". But once I told a doctor that I think that I'm anorexic and she looked me up and down and said "No I think you look fine!". Most GPs are not trained to help with EDs, they are trained to write prescriptions.
