Vodafone V's O2 for IPHONE

    Hi,

Apologies if this is posted in the wrong place but I'm new to boards.ie and am unsure where to go or what i'm looking at.

Just wondering what peoples thoughts were on the going with Vodafone or O2 for the Iphone? Some people have the Iphone on Vodafone and most on O2. With the VF launch sometime next month - I've been waiting for it with but just looking at the tariffs they are offering at the moment on their active tariffs I'm thinking of switching to O2 instead (Something I never thought I'd do!). The cost to buy the phone is the same with both O2 and VF even though I'm due an upgrade etc...... Anyone any input on this?

I have my name down for that external company to call me etc, but I'm just a little disheartened with Vodafone. The girl in VF yesterday couldn't tell me if the tariffs offered with this external company were going to be the same as VF will be offering when it comes out in a month or so. I'm going to wait to see what’s offered then but am I wasting my time and should I just go to O2? I've heard of few ppl at this stage gone to O2 and delighted with the move, cost wise etc.... Thanks

Don't worry, you have the correct forum now. :) Plus, you know where to go for discussion on the iPhone in future.

make sure you do your research before signing up with 02. Many people here regret moving to o2 for the iphone. They can be very sneaky and once they have you locked in contract, they take full advantage of this in any way that they can think of...Their goal is not to keep their iphone customers happy, but instead to think of news ways of locking them in for another 18 months..

I'm not sure what VF will be like but it won't be hard for them to be more customer friendly than 02...

Agree with post above. O2 rang me a few weeks ago to see if I'd be interested in a new tarriff that was a whole 5 euro a month less than I'm paying now (big deal) but I'd have to lock into another 18 month contract to switch tarriffs. I told them to keep their offer and that I'd be switching to VF.

We'll have to see what Vodafone deals are actuall like, it looks like they'll be basically the same as O2s. However O2 treat their customers very poorly so if you haven't got an iphone already, wait until Voda properly release it so you can compare. All things being equal I'd go with vodafone, they are unlikey to be much better than O2 but they could hardly be any worse!

Vodafone's offerings better be good given the weight of expectation from the O2 bashers!

Any know what length contracts they'll make people sign? 12 months only would be a huge bonus, but 18 months would make them no better than those cads at O2. ;)

They will be 18 months apparently, I don't think Voda will have a great offering, it will be similar to O2s. However those of us who are with O2 for a while may not need much more than that to move!

I've always found O2 to be very good, have been with them about 5 years and nary a complaint I've had! I'd be interested to see whether or not the competition between them and Vodafone will result in lower prices for the iPhone and the tarriffs.

Thanks everyone, I'll wait to see what VF offer so, the thoughts of being locked in with o2 each time you want a tariff change is not appealing. I know it's an 18 month contract with VF also. My sister got the iphone with this external company with VF and it was free for her as she was due an upgrade but appearently they have gotten rid of that and have jumped on the band waggon of charging people. The extra tariff of free calls to all Irish numbers with o2 evening and weekends is just so appealling!! But again I'll wait to see... I was just delighted when my sister got her iphone for free and pays the €65 a month charge.

Just to clarify. We do not force you to recontract everytime you change price plan. If that is what is holding you back from joining O2 you do not need to worry about it.

I'm really amazed at the people who have declared O2 as evil incarnate and decided they are off to Vodafone without seeing what Vodafone have to offer.

While O2 iPhone tariff prices are higher than other providers throughout the world, so is every other mobile tariff, Ireland is known as an expensive place for mobile phone tariffs. Vodafone will not provide anything different.

I had the same phone call asking me if i wanted to change my tariff, i said no, I'll wait to see in June (when my contract is up). Nobody forced you to resign to o2. Vodafone will also have an 18 month contract.

02 now charge for the phone. What a strange competitive stance to take when clearly their monopoly is over.

Vodafone will give you the phone for free on the Perfect Choice Access Plus 300 tarrif.

That has sold me on Vodafone. I am now waiting for the release.

Be careful OP, this is the kind of stuff you can't trust. Note the wording doesn't say that they don't require you to recontract, just that it isn't everytime.i.e sometimes they do. So you certainly need to worry about it.

oh, so if you want to move from old iphone plans to the new ones, you don't get locked into a new 18 month contract?

what about if you want one of the 'free' add ons that you offer new customers, if a current customer does not have 1 of these and wishes to avail of one, can they do so without being locked into a new 18 month contract?

Very dodgy and misleading stuff there. I'm six months into an O2 iPhone contract, I want to move to a more expensive contract and to give you more money yet in order to do so I have to sign a new 18 month contract, exending the time I'm locked into an O2 contract to 2 years.

The fact that I want to move to a higher contract doesn't matter either, regardless of whether I want to move up or down I have to sign a new contract.

Cuaifeach - where did you hear that VF were going to impose a charge for the iPhone?

I have been led to believe by VF that if I move from my current tarrif of €49.99 (Perfect Choice 200) to €65 per month (Perfect Choice Access Plus 300) I will get the iPhone for free. If this is now not the case, I may have to reconsider getting an iPhone...

ios originally sold the iphone for free on the pca300 but that has now changed in the last week or so to €129 :( , to be fair voda are not taking payment for this its ios!

I was told by vodafone cs today that if i move from pc200 (49.99) to pcaccess (65) i'll get the iphone for free. I was on complaining about the blackberry data add-on they had given me and she advised me to move to the iPhone.......within 2 weeks. So it has to be out soon

IOS rang me only yesterday evening to offer me the iphone again. I told them that due to the €129 charge they were imposing I'd wait to see what VF bring out in the next few weeks (it is unknown what charges VF themselves will go with) - if they can be more competitive or what, and then I'll decide between O2 & VF. She said this is fair enough. When they got in the second round of phones the charge was put on them - this only happened in the past 2 weeks. Also in relation to the tariffs on VF, I think you have to have the phone 6 months before you can change your tariff and then you can change as you please without being locked into another contract.

I will say it here knowing Vodafone watch these threads.

I want an iPhone and will only accept one on the PCA300 if its FREE like I was told it would be when my details were taken over the phone by Vodafone CS.

If you want money from me you can swing for it.

History shows that the rules tend to change with iPhone - and what was the case for normal tariffs may well not apply to them.

Anyone know if Vodafone will be able to offer the 4G assuming it comes out this summer? Or is their deal limited to the 3GS?

They'll have the same access as o2 to any new phones.

Cool. Will be waiting 'till the new phone comes out and then decide on carriers. :)

Seeing as there hasn't been a 4G even confirmed yet, isn't that a bit misleading? No-one outside Apple knows yet what there policy will be if and when a new iPhone is announced. For all you know, they may announce 3 as the exclusive carrier for the next iPhone.......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,176 ✭✭✭vinnycoyne

The current trends indicate that Apple are moving away from exclusivity deals with the carriers.

Precisely. Common sense will tell you that it makes no sense for a company the size of Vodafone to just sign a deal for the 3GS with a replacement coming in 3-4 months.

That is a much more balanced answer. Tim Cook's answer the other days shows how differently markets perform, but I would expect them to stay away from exclusivity once they make the break...

"In Apple's top ten iPhone countries last year, five were single-carrier countries. Three were by contract, and two were by choice where we could add additional carriers at any time. In 2009, we added carriers in France, UK, Singapore, Scandinavian countries, Canada. In every single country, our units increased significantly. So we made really good decisions. But I'm not saying it would be the case in every country. We look at things on a country-by-country basis."

VF CS are telling me today that it is €129. I am fighting my corner on this because IOS told me it would be €0 but they have none left and will they have more they will contact me.

It's not my fault they didn't have enough so as I was quoted €0 for the phone that is what I will accept.

If they say NO, then I will say NO!

Dead right. More people should tell O2 and VF to sod off, they'd soon realise there are more phones on the market.......

VF and not IOS told me that it would be free if I upgraded to the €65 per month tarrif. Berty, are you sure it wasn't VF you were speaking to? - if so then on what grounds can they suddenly turnaround and slap an extra fee of €129???

Sorry both people told me it was €0 but I was quoting IOS because they are the one's who are trying to deal with it now.

I was also speaking to VF CS who promised me a call back today but low and behold it never happened.

I spoke to VF a few minutes ago and they are going to sort something out because of my complaint regarding the €129.

It's ex gratia really so I won't declare it openly.

ahhh...I got the call this afternoon from VF. He listed off the tariffs - special offer on the 65euro option, 600mins & txts, 2gb, free vf-vf, 129 for the phone. Might go for the 50euro, 350mins/txts, 200 for the phone option.....decisions decisions....

I got the same deal - it may be because I had an upgrade coming my way. Don't know if that's a common factor.

I bought mine from IOS and paid the €129. VF refunded/credited me two months line rental. :)
