Just a quick note...not been to a Dentist in 6 years....Had extensive work done under sedation previously...Recently got a swelling under my gum ( and also had a rotten wisdom )

Due to a MEGA phobia , I had not gone to dentist... UNTIL yesterday...
It turns out after all my fretting and sleepless nights , I only need 3 fillings , 1 tooth out ( which I knew anyway ) and a root canal.....

I cant believe I didnt go sooner......

Believe me , if I can go , anyone can....I was literally bricking it !! ... I feel great now having gone , and CANNOT WAIT to get the work done !!

I second that! That's exactly the sentiment of most people who come for dental treatment after an absence of many years.
They realise their fear was totally misplaced and after a few short entertaining visits their mouths feel much better.

    Good news for you!

Most people find that things are not as bad as they had thought. I gets a bit depressing at times when all you hear is bad dental stories - bad treatment, poor behaviour, phobias, prices etc.

Like Georgieporgie it is great to get a bit of good news about dentistry, made my day!

That first visit is always the hardest, i went for the first time in 3 years about 3 weeks. I knew i needed some work done, will have to get 6 fillings. Went last Thursday and got 2 done, it wasnt as bad as i expected. Dentist was really nice about it as well, told me to raise my hand if i want to stop at anytime..I used to dread the injection, but it was a little pinch. Felt no pain when the fillings were been done. Hopefully the rest will be the same.....will have no fear in going for regular check-ups when this work is done.....
Only pain was paying for it!!!!!

If I am getting any local anaesthetic or drilling done I will take a half to a whole 5mg valium and it is a fantastic help especially with the waiting room palpatations! The fear of what is about to happen is always far worse than the treatment imo.

just editing to say, you might want to ask your GP's advice on other anti-anxiety meds... recently heard there are much better ones that leave the system more quickly than valium does. I happen to have a good few still in stock so that's why I use them! (and only occasionally!)

I spent years of avoiding the dentist and only extreme pain would get me into the chair!

Over the last 8 months or so I have been to the dentist at least 25 times! It's a very long story but I have to say exposure to your fears and phobias really does lessen them hugely!

So nice to hear a positive story relating to dentists. I have just joined this site to ask opinions about dentists in Dublin as I am currently suffering with an abcess under a rotten tooth which NEEDS attention but I am too terrified to make the appointment :(

Surfing X-boxer is your dentist in Dublin? If so can you PM me details please?
