Trying to format a Mac Book

I'm trying to reinstall the OS on a Mac Book and format the hard drive to wipe it. It's running 10.5.6 and the CD is 10.5.5

The only thing is, the CD is scratched, and the format fails every time. Is there any other way of doing this? Can I use a newer CD of Mac that my mate has? (eg Snow Leaopard or something).

Sorry for sounding ignorant or stupid, I have little experience with Macs.

If your mate's install disc is the retail version of Snow Leopard, then yes, you can use it too. But if it's the install disc that came with his Mac, no.
