    Hi All

I am only after discovering a fault with my car but am not sure what it is, Basically when i start the car, the engine is a lot loader then normal, the car itself is idling perfectly.

i took it out for a spin and its seems to be driving oddly when i apply a little pressure to the accelerator the noise seems disappear?

When i lock the wheel to the left or right there is a screeching sound coming from the car? I checked under the bonnet and all seems to be ok apart from the loud engine.

The timing belt was recently done by my mechanic but the car is due its service, Any idea's what the problem may be?

    All advice greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like the belt driving power steering pump. Was this belt replaced? Some of these have an automatic tensioner (but some also have a manual tensioner to set the initial tension when fitted).

Check to see if the fan belt is hopping up and down when the car is ticking over?

If it is it could be the tensioner, but it's more likely to be the pulley on the alternator! These pulleys freewheel in one direction and when they seize you will hear a bit of screeching when the car is idling. It disappears if you touch the accellerator slightly.

Its probably either fan belt + tensioner, or more likely alternator pulley.

The earlier you fix the alternator the cheaper the job (my pulley actually came off while driving last week!)

A mechanic will easily diagnose it. You can then take off the belt, tensioner and alternator and bring the alternator to a specialist who should fix it for about 100-140.

Definitely not something you want to put on the long finger, as I did :)
