Winter Olympics : Why still two Germanies

    The medal table you are looking at is the all time standing for alpine skiing. Pre 1990 West Germany had won medals in alpine, East Germany had not.

    If they had a table for all time standing for Bobsleigh I'm sure you would see entries for East Germany before 1990.

    I think there is actually 4 Germanies listed in the IOC data of countries over the years.

    Germany = pre war and post re-unification
    West Germany & East Germany = post war until 1989(?)
    Unified team = first Olympics after the wall came down but not yet actually one country

    I'm surprised East Germany never won any winter medals. Due to the way entries work in events it would be wrong to combine the medal totals from two different IOC contries after the event as they would potentially have had twice as many competitors in each event, so they leave them as seperate entities.

    Not sure why they ever bothered with keeping the unified team seperate though.

    I got my breakdown of the Germanies the wrong way round a bit:

    GER = Germany = 1896 - 1952 and 1992 - current
    FRG = West Germany = 1968 - 1988
    GDR = East Germany = 1968 - 1988
    EUA = United Team of Germany = 1956 -1964

    No reason for the GER and EUA totals not to be combined and I don't know why they don't, but the FRG and GDR ones need to be counted seperately.
