To put it basically; it's a scale of how good a horse is and they are awarded their racing weight in handicaps according to this. It's pretty much a subjective rating; there are no set out guidelines as far as I know it's just one lads opinion - a fellow called the handicapper. He's Noel O'Brien in these parts and the paddy loving Phil Smith in the UK.

where i ride out now the boys would always talk about this or that horse and one would always say "he's rated 122(example) over hurdles, blah blah"
and i was always sitting there going "ya christ is he that that high" with no clue

ill get the boss to explain it saturday

You have a different Hurdles rating to your Chases rating. Some horses make better hurdlers (speedier, smaller etc) and others better chasers (stronger, bigger etc) which I'm sure you know yourself from riding out.

Edit; See War of Attrition as an example of a horse who has differing ratings over different obstacles.

i also understood that much(maybe im not as thick as i thought) but it was the way ratings are calculated and related to weight i was unsure of

    thanks

Depends on the grade of race essentially-

Suppose you have a horse rated 118.
Suppose he is entered in a race that is open to horse rated up to 120.

    He is eligible and entered.

The highest weight that can be carried in the race is 11-12 (barring some anomalies such as penalties)

If there is a horse bang on the race ceiling 120, he will carry 11-12, the top weight possible. The horse rated 118, will carry 11-10 in the race. A second horse rated 116, will carry 11-8. And so on.

If the highest rated horse in the race is 118, he will automatically carry top weight, 11-12 and all weights carried by all horses will be adjusted upwards by 2 lbs.

If your 118 rated horse is rated in a race where the rating ceiling is 140. He can expect to carry at most 22lbs less than the highest rated horse in the race.

Pretty much some lads subjective opinio based on him being paid to go/watch ratings and the precedent set from previous years. They're usually good stats/maths men - combine times/distances with the variables such as ground etc to come up with a rating. The (uattainable) ideal is for every horse to have a chance at the finish in a handicap.

Another point to make is that some horses that are rated highly may put some horses out of the handicap proper - i.e. theres a minimum weight you can carry and a horse rated 30+ pounds ahead of the lowest horse might result i the lower horse beig out of the handicap. NintyTwo Team is one that springs to mind - he was out of the handicap proper and won at Galway a couple of years ago.

I think it's how the weights are allocated in each race he's having trouble with. Morgans gives a good answer there. if you read the conditions of the race at the top of the race card it will tell you how the race is framed and how the weights are allocated.

Completely off topic, but if you need quite a heavy saddle to make up the 12 stone, then it might be a good idea to ask the valet if you could take the saddle for an extra day or two to get used to it. Jumping in a 2 stone saddle can take a bit of getting used to :)

If you will need to use a valet and need a contact number, PM me and I can forward you on the guy's name and number.

Defo not a good idea to eat badly to try to put on weight - it's much harder to drop weight after changing eating habits to put on the extra weight, as I found out through experience :(
