First off Mod's, if I've posted this query in the wrong forum, please move to what ever forum you consider correct.

I was in a quandry as to posting here or in games/consoles but as I said above please move if needed.

I recently bought a PS3 for game play and Blueray viewing. I purchased a HDMI cable which connects the ps3 to my HD ready TV and the picture and sound from it is top notch. I watched my first blueray (UP) and was blown away with the picture and thought I might add to the experience by playing the sound through my dvd player surround sound system which is a 4 year old LG.

I ended up using the original cable that came with the playstation which has 3 coloured jacks and plugged 2 of them (red and white) into the input connection at the back of the dvd player. After much confusion as to why I had only stereo or 2.1 sound, I googled the problem and d'oh, the reason why it's stereo, is; it's a stereo <facepalm> connection.

After furthur googling, I read about an optical to rca adaptor

    http://www.hdtvsupply.com/difiopttodic.html

which if I buy an optical audio cable I could use to connect to my dvd player but and here (eventually) is my question will I get 5.1 sound by using this, I suspect not.

I would prefer not to buy a new dvd player just for 5.1 sound as I got the PS3 to play bluerays and my DVDs, so I reckon a new dvd player would gather a much dust as the old one. So my second question would be, is there a good quality cheap receiver/amp I could buy and simply connect this to my present speakers and then by optical audio cable to my PS3.

I reckon I've shown enough of my lack of knowledge in this field so all help and advice would be greatfully recieved.

    hi

if the only input on your lg yoke is red&white connectors then you cant get proper 5.1 into it. what is the model of it? some units have a dolby simulator thing that wont get you "true" 5.1 but will spilt the stereo signal to your 5 speakers so you'll hear something from all your speakers.

in terms of a small receiver & speakers you'll be talking about 200 i reckon, minimum.

something like this that has an optical input will sort you right out. i know that has a built in dvd but for the life of me i cant think of anything right now without the built in dvd!!

Thank you Adam, I'm away at the moment so haven't a clue as to the model type although I do know it's no longer on the LG website so it's pretty old. I mentioned the problem to the brother-in-law and he reckons I might be able to get a seperate 5.1 digital amp but it will be somewhat similar in price to a surround sound system. So looks like I'll be heading down that road when she has her back turned, after the new telly and Ps3 a new dvd player (seeing as we have one) might be a purchase too far.
