Hi Guys ( I hope im posting in the right section),

I am living in the UK for the last 5 years and im just graduated from college and im working in the UK until next christmas when i will then return to ireland for good. I bought a car at the end of july as i needed it for work and also i will be able to bring it back to Ireland with me at christmas and i will be exempt form paying the VRT however my dad also now wants to buy a car in the UK in my name and then he wants me to bring it back with me when im coming home so he will also save himself the VRT charges..Im wondering is this possible and can it be done i.e. can i buy two cars back there and bring them back with me next xmas and not pay the VRT? and if so how do i go about doing it in order to insure everything is ok when im bringing it across on the ferry? Ive herd of people doing this and hence why im asking.

    Please help...

I know this is a big topic but i would be extremely greatful if anybody could help me as i do not know where to start...:confused:

    Thanks a million,

    Cormac

As far as i know you cant for vrt purposes. Only one car can be cleared foc every few years.

You can bring in more than one car this way. I know someone who has done this with a 4x4 & a convertible. As long as they are your cars for your use. He just showed that he owned two cars for more than the year & all the relevant insurance documents & other proof of ownership.

For either car, unless you can show your a temp visitor in Ireland you'll have to pay the VRT. It used to be that once you had a ferry ticket on you when stopped that would get you by for 6mths, as it as proof you were back and forth. (could have all changed I can't remember)

    Anyway from the VRT site:

If you bring a vehicle into Ireland from abroad you must register it and pay VRT by the end of the next working day following its arrival in the State.

Where a vehicle is not registered on time, an additional assessment of VRT may be raised at the time of registration for the period a vehicle remained unregistered in the State.

It should be noted that an unregistered vehicle may be detained by Revenue officials or by An Garda Siochana. In certain circumstances, a vehicle may be seized by Revenue officials and may only be released on the payment of a penalty.

thanks guys for the info, im 100% sure that i can bring one car into the ireland without paying vrt. Also i thought that the cars had to be in my name for 6months or more in england and not twelve?? but im open to correction.,..

you can bring at least one car in on transfer of residence VRT free, i cant see why there would be a limit once you could prove they were yours and for your use only. After all they wouldnt stop you bringing in 6 dining chairs would they! Supposed to be part of your personal effects moving into the country

If you are allowed bring more than one, you would have to be able to prove that you had owned and used them for at least six months (insurance, verifiable mileage increases etc.).

2 should be fine as long as they are insured & taxed by you for the required period. They will also prevent you from selling for a year when you get them on Irish plates. Now I dont know if this will create any insurnace issues here. If your father wants to insure the car on his own policy, they might made it hard for him as generally the policy holder must be car owner or spouse.
If you were to insure both in your name, you would only be able to use your no claims bonus on one policy. The second policy would not have a no claims bonus & could be expensive.

correct.....And has far as i know you cant sell the car on for at least a year to get it into your dads name....Id just pay the vrt:) if it was in the 1 - 3 k bracket....but that depends on what he is buying:)

Has your father decided what car they want and is it definitely cheaper in the UK? Having to keep the 2nd car in your name for a year may knock any savings made by having to pay more for insurance.
