    Hi
I was in work in today and had a meeting with my bosses about how my progress was goin. Have been in a small practice, 3 partners & 5 staff, for last 3years. They were talkin bout how I should be more interested in what goes on in the business world instead of the football world as well as read the business post instead of the NOTW on sundays. Now Im a 26 yr old who has 4 ACCA exams left and who loves all sports and socialising, not so much into all the business world's in and outs even though I am a good accountant. I chose accountancy as I was good at numbers in school and didn't fancy working physical work in Ireland's freezing climate. Im now kinda worried is this whole world for me and have I made a mistake and wasted time.

What Im asking is, Is there many other males of females out there who would rather think of accountancy as a job rather than a career? or if there's any who have the same kinda thinkin as me.

    Cheers

I feel you pain! Accountancy is merely a temporary job for me. Once I finish my 3.5 years I'm never going back to it. Just have zero interest in it whatsoever!

I'm two exams away from being Cima qualified. I hope to abandon the area if I ever get qualified. I think that a Cima/Acca/Aca qualification supercedes a masters in the modern world. I see more senior accountants in the companies I have worked in and I think there is easier ways to make money! Not sure what they are but I'll try and find out.

I think the professional qualification opens many doors across a broad range of functions in any well managed organisation.

I look at my job now and saw I couldn't do this for the rest of my life.

i take a decent interest in business as a whole in the papers or news. I would not go out of my way to buy the Sunday Business post though for example. I find the area interesting but not that interesting, in the same wa I'd watch a champions league match if its on but am not really bother about football in general

Practise is very very very dull. Best off getting out as quick as possible. Smile and nod and agree with your bosses, pretend to take an interest.

When you qualify get out. There are so many better places to work.

Kind of agree with Ron. If you start forcing yourself you will eventually get an interest in it. I don't think it is something you can look at as a job (due to the hours) so you may aswell try and get some enjoyment from it.
Lets be honest football isn't that interesting. For every classic match there is a Stoke v Bolton game. It is generally 85 minutes of nothing and 5 minutes of shouting at the screen. We are socialised to it as this is what we talk about to our friends blah blah etc etc.
So I guess I'm advising you to find some boring friends:p

what due you mean "due to the hours", hours are same as any other job...

I'm sure it depends on where you work. For example ask a Big 4 Auditor if there are enough hours in the week to complete their work during busy season!
Like every industry I am sure some work harder than others.
My point though was that developing an interest in his job would be beneficial

Are you actually comparing Football to Audit?

The worst football game on earth would be about 1000 times more interesting than the most exciting audit (no such thing!).

Accountancy is very much a career and one you have chosen. If you are doing a good job of work and working hard at exams its difficult to see how anyone can complain. I would say to bear in mind that in a few years you will be making your living sitting down with business people who will be anxious to know the person advising knows a bit more than putting figures together

    hahaha. Yeah fair point.

Don't worry yourself about things like Sunday Business Post etc. In time, you'll start picking up bits and pieces from news items, radio etc. I'm a self employed practising accountant and absolutely fanatic about all sports.

To be honest, you need an interest outside of accounts. More often than not we're considered to have a poor social skills and an accountant with a personality is a rare one.

You'll find the area you want to work in in time. I didn't take to Industry as i got bored looking after one company and actually enjoy working with all my different clients and listening to their ideas of how to improve/make more money. It won't all be about bookkeeping/data entry and pure audit for the rest of your career.

Anyway, your 26, just relax. Your more than likely working for smallish money at the minute so once you close the door in the evening, leave the work behind you till you hit office in morning!

I thought someone was writing about my life when i read this but there are some differences. Im in a medium sized practice and i just qualified ACA. Someone once said that football is not a matter of life and death, its more important. Who on earth would ever say that about audit???

Anyway i would have a small interest in what goes on in the business world but its purely from listening to news and flicking through the independant every now and again (usually looking for soccer results). You dont need to be reading the SBP or FT even if you do want to stay working in this business.

Really? That whole attitude stinks to be honest, very negative, I think I was like that in my first 2 years as well - sometimes clients / bosses wear you down and the work isn't very interesting.

I've been working in busy small firm for 7 years (1 partner plus 8 staff), - in any one day I could be on the phone to the China, Japan, Italy, Netherlands, the US etc... with regular business trips to the UK and asia. I spend 2 months of the year in China alone as our firm has carved out a niche there - delivering irish setup and accounting services to a certain industry there.

I think the opportunities and experience and potential to travel are unreal in practice. You get to spend time and network with people running companies day in day out and see how business works - what a fantastic job. The hours can be tough, this week I've worked until 1am two of the days and I'll be spending all day tomorrow in the office. I would do this job for 15K per year it's so much fun.
