Hey, am heading on a J1 to new york and will be living somewhere in Brooklyn. There are 2 of us goin over and we are looking to share a one bedroom place, and just put down an extra matress or something as we are trying to keep rent to an absolute minimum. Rent between us provided we can find a place that will let us share is looking to be about $700-$800 per month but I have not researched it too much yet. Some of the more trendy neighborhoods in Brooklyn are more expensive than others but we are hoping to live somewhere like Willaimsburg, Brunswick, or Fort Green. Anyway I have some friends I can stay with once I arrive so I won't need to fork out for hostels and I intend on findind a job asap. I'm assuming we will have to hand over a security deposit and a months rent once we move in somewhere and finding a job might take a few weeks if things are not too good. So I am thinking about $2000 is needed to ensure that I survive while looking for work and getting set up in general. Anybody who has been to new york on a J1 or who is going have any advice on how much cash you think is needed?

    Thanks

I'd say that if you are including a month's rent plus the deposit in the $2000 then you have more than enough. After rent plus deposit, I am hoping to have anywhere from €300 - €700 saved up to live off until I get a job and get my first paycheck

EDIT: lol that should be pay cheque. In American/English mode already!

Yeah I guess it all depends what you plan to do once you arrive. For example when I went to Boston on my first J1 I didn't even work for the first month because I was living off about €700 I had in the bank. I was under 21 though so was never drinking in bars or clubs and just going to parties. You'd be surprised how cheap you can live in the states if you are cute with money. Thing is I intend to be out a lot in New York and while I intend on drinking at home first, you still gotta pay admissions for gigs and buy the few drinks in clubs (or cokes to poor your hip flask into).

I just don't wanna bring over too little money and be really under pressure looking for work just in case it is tough. Don't really wanna be house bound either. I'm taking out a travel loan so I guess I can just have x amount in my account and hopefully I will find work early and not need to spend all of the loan money. I think surviving entirely off your wages for the summer in NYC would be a great achievement, and I'd be well happy with this!
