    How's it going?

    I'm using a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop, 80gb Hdd, 1gb Ram(896mb?) Running windows Xp Pro Media center.

    Im wondering should I bother upgrading ram and hard drive, and load up windows 7?

    Or just get a new machine.

    Thanks.

    If I were in your position I'd load up windows 7 first and see how it runs as is, once done you can make a decision after wards, if you have the money to spare I'd probably keep my eyes open for a good offer on a new laptop..it's always nice to get a new laptop :D, if not then I'd make sure to get a 7200 rpm HDD to replace you're current one, makes a big difference.

    Depends on what you are looking for really. People ask us all the time about Windows 7 upgrades and unless you have a new machine upgrading isn't going to do much for you.
    It is nice to have the slick look and new features of Windows 7 but to be honest, unless you have plenty of RAM and a dedicated graphics gard you will find yourself labouring under the weight of all the bells and whistles of Windows 7.
    Get yourself a good RAM upgrade and clean out your current OS, that will get your system running nice and fast. We're currently selling 1GB upgrades for Inspiron 1501 laptops for €37 each in Teleport.ie. You can always upgrade to Win 7 later but if you don't invest in RAM now it will only break your heart later.

    HTH,

    What processor is in the 1501? If it is decent then a new hd: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=442282
    and 2Gb of ram may be a good upgrade path for you.
    @patchrick, is that a 1Gb dimm for 37?
    Here is one for 24 if that is the route you choose. http://www.memoryc.ie/products/description/1GB_A_Data_DDR2_800MHz-PC2_6400-SO_DIMM_200_pin_module/index.html

    Keep in mind that the laptop probably has 2*512 sticks, so to upgrade to 2GB you'd have to buy 2*1GB sticks, or a single 2 stick

    Processor upgrades are a good idea, if you need the processing power. That said though, most modern processors (except celerons etc) are more than adequate for most "regular" use.
    Re RAM, by the time you add the memoryc shipping cost (approx €6) and our time to test the ram once installed there's little difference in the cost...
