How do?....Do we Irish citizens have a constitutional right/civil right to speak Irish as we see fit?..eg...If I get stopped by An Garda Siochana and I speak Irish to him/her/them,can they tell me to shut up and speak english or do they have to converse As Gaeilge?...Sound!:D

Tá sé de cheart agat an chéad theanga oifigiúl a úsáid le seirbhíseach de chuid an stáit agus muna bhfuil gaeilge aige/aici ba cheart go bhfaigheadh sé/sí oifigeach eile le gaeilge duit.

Every citizen has the right to use the first official language with servants of the state.

Of course you have a right to speak as gaeilge. But the Garda also has the right to keep you at a checkpoint etc until a translater is brought to the scene.....which might delay you a small bit.

I always reply in Irish, however most just drop it straight away.

There was always a myth that if a Garda couldn't respond to you or arrest you as Gaeilge, then they had to let you go.

As NGA points out, they can simply hold you until such time as someone capable of speaking Irish is available.

I used to get a similar sort of delaying tactics in the states. You would get a chancer who would address you in Spanish. Same deal he would be held until a Spanish speaking officer could be found.
