crashed my car into a wall, what next?

    Hi
I crashed my car into a wall a week ago, no one was involved. The bumper and front light are to be replaced. I went through insurance (hibernian). Didnt get the report from eng who looked at my car yet, but the garage told me that it looks like damage to the car exceeds the 70% of the value of the car. (seat ibiza '02 worth ~3k)

My question is: what next? Will i be able to repair the car on my own and get the car back on the roads? Or the car goes to the scrap yard? Will the insurance give me some money?

The only things to repair are bumper and lamp!

    Cheers,
    J.

    Wouldn't have thought a bumper and lamp x 2 would cost 70% of 3k?

There could be chassis damage aswell. If they consider it a BER they will issue you with a settling amount. Just remember though, you dont have to accept it. Get an independant mechanic to check it over if you want.

    1. Insurance company will give you the value of the car minus about 20% if you have comprehensive At 70% value they will not repair. If no comprehensive insurance, you get nothing.
    2. Maybe, if you don't take the money from the insurance company then there is no claim and you can try to repair it yourself.
    3. If you take the money, yes.
    4. See above

the only things that you can see are the bumper and lamp. There are parts behind that you know.

    I know!

When i went to the garage before ringing insurance, mechanic told me that the cost will be around 500e.
The guy from ins company said it will cost around 2k - new parts and labor!

    Dont get that at all!
Dont know what to do now...

    btw, have fully comp,

the insurance told me that i wont loose no claim bonus, cos no one was involved, and the garage told me that i wont have to pay the excess (from my policy) 300e as well...
So then i decided to go through insurance...

I'd take that with a pinch of salt unless you have 'no claim bonus protection' on your policy. A claim is a claim whether or not anyone else was involved or not. If I was told that I'd be looking for it in writing.

But what will that change? If the guy from ins company thinks the damage exceeds 70% of the car value, can i get other mechanic to look at that and price it for less?

I recently crashed my car (Ford Escort) into a wall (skidded on some ice). Anyway, I didn't bother going through the insurance, they'll screw you in the coming years, plus you'll loose your NCB. So I paid for all of the repairs out of my own pocket, even though it was quite expensive.

    Hi OP,

I recently crashed my car, Value of my car was €2,800 before crash and repair costs were estimated at €2,700. They repaired my car and did not offer settlement. My insurance was with Hibernian also. I rand up and asked why they had decided to repair my car and they said that it is a change of policy that they now try and repair most cars and do not settle. So i would guess that unless cost of repairs is greater than value of car they will repair your car.

Surely it would of been cheaper to buy a new Escort?

They'll give you full trade value I believe

One could debate that. Their is the risk of buying another 2nd hand car and it turning out to be a heap of shíte. So I decided to repair the Escort instead. Plus I had only passed the NCT about a month prior to he crash.

It's a grand reliable car anyway.

    How much were the repairs?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,461 ✭✭✭Max_Damage

    €600 for the car.

Alot more for the wall. It was a dry stone wall, which means it needs more specialist stonemasons to do the job.

    For the OP.
If they are writing it off, they will have to pay its reasonable market value & they then own the car. You can make a deal with them to reduce the pay out by what ever the scrap value is & let you keep the car. You can then repair it.

You may be able to get it fixed (and properly) a far less cost than a insurance company will charge.

Well it going through the insurance, hoping it won’t be over 5k (for the other van) because FBD won’t insure you. The car is a 2L diesels corolla 97, is it worth save with chasses damage? I’m driving the brother Nissan and its 20euro more a week in fuel:mad:
