Thinking of changing to a diesel ?

I am driving a 2005 Ford Mondeo. It's a 1.8 lx 110 ps. I travel about 800km per week. I am looking for a diesel with the same power but with a smaller engine as the tax will be less. I can get 440 driving hard and around 500 if I take it easyout of a 60 litre tank . This is ok but I want something more economical. Any ideas ? Thanks

What kind of budget do you have? I presume you're looking for something smaller than a mondeo with a smaller engine? Perhaps a Focus TDCi 1.6, i'm pretty sure they come in a 110hp version.

Do you know thier mpg? is there any other cars around the same size as the focus with small diesel engines?

Corolla diesel sounds good. Would be less on tax and insurance and would be cheaper to fill up. Would be reluctant to buy a citroen or peugeot.
Why, oh yes, they are French.
In actual fact, they have the most ecnomical diesels. You would pay less every week at the pumps. Corolla diesel is ecnomical but not as ecnomical as the PSA unit AFIK.

Indeed, the French make a superb diesel engine :) The rest of the car though would be unlikely to age as well as the Corolla.

Apart from the savings at the pump each week I have had a Corolla before and have total faith in them. I just wouldn't drive a French car. I know Nissan use Renault diesels and they are good just French cars have a very low resale value.

If you can buy a 2008 car there is no reason to pay any attention whatsoever to the capacity of the engine. All that will matter is the tax band.

Personally I wouldn't touch a toyota. They are utterly dull and not any more reliable than other cars.

I would be tempted by something like a Citroen C5 1.6 HDi if you are trying to get decent value. Very cheap to buy s/h and a wonderful diesel.

Cant really afford a 2008. I know thats when the emissions came in. Does anyone know anything about Diesel tuning boxs or remapping ? Can it be done to a Corolla d4d or Focus tdci ?

    French cars???

I have a Toyota Auris which is the new model of the corolla hatchback. It is one of the ones that has been recalled for to have the accelerator updated. Thankfully the accelerator hasn't given any problems.

Funny thing is that my car was made in France. So too are the new Corollas (The garage I bought the auris from told me). It was assembled in the same garage as the Peugeot 308 and the Citroen C3 and a small number of these have also been recalled because of faulty accelerator parts.

French cars have great engines, but they really do fall apart and get very rattely. My auris is a French car, its nothing like the corollas that I had in the past. It squeaks and rattles and it feels dangerous to drive on a windy day as the wind seems to push it all over the place. It drives the exact same as a Pug 308 that my Mrs had. I had a 06 corolla before the Auris and it was tough as nails. The 1.4 d4d engine is really fuel efficient and has long service intervals. it will do 1000km to 45 litres of diesel (about €50 at current fuel prices).

So if you're buying, definitely don't go for the Toyota Auris. Personally I have my reservations about the new model Corolla. Anything up to 07 is a great buy and will never let you down.

Is that 440Km to 500Km per tank, or is it miles?
Skoda octavia 1.9Tdi . I have a petrol one for 5 years and never had an issue with it.

I am interested in the Corolla and the Focus. Focus is probably nicer to drive but the Corolla is a more reliable car. Fords are dodgy to start especially the new ones. My Mondeo can be difficult to start on occasions.

The Mazda 3 1.6 diesel? It's the same engine as the Focus (a Frenchie and none the worse for that)

    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=201001196459189

AFAIK Ford stopped selling the 110 bhp version of this engine for a few years and only offered it in 90bhp form because it competed with it's in-house 1.8d. I think the Mazdas are 110bhp.

A French diesel engine married to a Jap car seems like the ideal combo to me...

Its miles. skoda diesels are good. They are owned by VW just have a poor resale value

not many of the mazda's around do

Pretty sure the 1.4 307 won some award or something for the most fuel efficient diesel car at some stage.

Rememeber reading an article about it in the paper with some couple doing mental milage on one tank of fuel or something.

Funny thing is the Auris is not built in France, the Yaris is. The Auris is made in the Toyota plant in England. The Peu 107, Citroen C1 and the Aygo (tiny Toyota) are I think made in Eastern Europe somewhere in a common facility.

It's 5 years old and doing 500 miles a week. Some ignition components may need replacing, Fords being poor starters was true in the 80s and early 90s, not in the last 10/15 years though.

Its still a piece of crap no matter where it was made and brings shame to the once outstanding Toyota Family. I will never buy another one and I know other Auris owners who will not either.

Ya, it was a 308 but it was tested in ideal conditions and with professional drivers...oh and it was Peugeot themselves did the test. Any number of the current small diesels would come close

No I remember the challange now Peugeot set, people of the public entered the competition prize being the car, who ever drove the most economical to get the best mpg won.

Peugeot hold the record alright (Round Britain Lowest Fuel Consumption World Record), Driving 3,700.1 miles achieving 126.82 MPG, 2.23 l/100 km on 2.41 Tanks of Shell Diesel costing £136.24 in a
Peugeot 308 HDi Diesel 1.6 Manual.

I really hope Brian Cowen doesn't read that, that's an opportunity for him to slash drink more and up fuel more in the next budget ..... Dail law : Luxury over necessity

I have the 110bhp version Ford Focus TDCi (2005). It comfortably gets 54mpg and with a bit more care I can get almost 60. However, I don't drive hard and most my mileage is on motorways and n roads.

AFAIK, only the GHia model has the 110 bhp engine but I'm open to correction on this.

Does anybody know something about remapping diesels or tuning boxs? I filled up Saturday it cost me €70. I am from Galway I drove up and down to dublin doing 150/160 on the motorway I still hav about €15 worth in the tank and have clocked up 660 km is this good for a 1.8 petrol on the main road.

That's exceptionally good at that speed

Tuning boxes are a scam, they just trick the engine management into doing things.

I don't know too much about remapping, a lot of turbodiesels can gain significantly from it but there is the risk of more stress on the clutch, gearbox and other things.

To work out fuel economy properly, fill the tank, reset your trip counter, then when you next fill it (doesn't really matter when but preferably let it go quite low) make a record of how much it took to fill it (if you pay by card it'll often say on the receipt, or just look at the pump) and also record what's on your trip counter. 4.546 litres in a gallon - work out the rest. :)www.fuelly.com will do the calculations for you if you're that interested.

That's over 40mpg based on the guestimate of the €15 left in the tank.

    Where is the scam ?
They give you more torque and bhp.

Many if not most cars won't do the redline in 5th, it is an overdrive.

I was thinking of those stupid eBay things that just trick the ECU into making the engine run rich. Are there tuning boxes that do something more useful?
