LTO3 capacity question

I'm using an Dell/IBM LTO3 drive with 400/800GB tapes. Backing up two ntbackup files, 278GB and 18GB. At 273GB the job stops, looking for additional media. The tape/job is set to overwrite. Compression is enabled. Why would the tape be taking such a small amount of data?

Edit: Win2003 server and Backup exec 10d, external tape drive.

Did you enable hardware or software compression ?

Hardware. Would compression be an issue even though the total backup size is less than the native tape capacity?

    Dodgy tape.

This has reared it's head again. On another tape (used 4 times) only getting 422GB using hardware compression. Backing up NT Backup files. Used to get over 600GB.

what type of files are you backing up for the most part?

Try running cleaning tape, if that does not help, replace drive. Compression etc has nothing to do with that.
Can try to update firmware and drivers but i doubt it will help.

Depends what type of files your backing up also.
Check out the technotes on the Symantec site in relation to backup exec and compression.
Some files compress much better than others...

Bear in mind that attempting to compress an already heavily compressed file can have the adverse effect. Try it without the compression to see if this helps.
