    Was speaking with a few friends over a few pints at the weekend and was amazed at how prevalent protection rackets are in dublin. We were talking about the head shops etc and a spar that was rumoured to have been burnt out over the weekend. Just curious if this kind of thing is prevalent in irish business's. Another friend who has a pub said he was approached by a fella when he first took over his pub and asked for money he ran him out of the place and never heard anything about it again.

    Not an issue for the vast majority of businesses in dublin I would imagine. There was a case involving a strip club in temple bar a couple of years ago IIRC and I can picture it being an issue for that type of business where there are crims and pimps on the fringes.
    I'll believe it when the "stand over merchants" drop in to visit.
