The old passport is returned to you - do with it as you like

with its corners snipped too so doubt it will be accepted as valid ID in the USA. Sure just use your new passport for ID?

Exactly. Depending on where you're going a passport may not be something they see every day (I was refused once because the guy had never owned a passport and therefore couldn't tell if mine was fake or not) and so one with clipped edges may not be accepted.

Thanks for the replys, would the new passport have the same passport number?

    Nope, I don't think so.

I've often wondered this about the passport number. I have a flight booked for May, but really need to get a new one before that. So do I have to contact the airline and get them to change my details?
Sorry for butting in but it's a similar issue.

Irish college ID is accepted everywhere in the US from my experience. You'd be foolish to bring a passport anywhere. Identity fraud is sadly more common than petty theft in the 'states'.

Then you've been lucky. Drivers license and Military ID are the only 100% acceptable Id's when buying cigs or in a bar.

Now if you look old and had them a different form of ID you'll probably be ok.

They don't generally take cancelled passports in the US! But I have found that they accept studet id in most places(not Vegas though).

If you join the French Foreign Legion, you can get a French passport after three years or if you get injured in battle. That way you can have two valid documents at a time.

Most college ID's don't have the dob on them unless you're under 18 when registering
