The 2.0 obviously has more power and is a more modern engine.

The 1.9 though is almost bulletproof. The 2.0 is known to be not as good as the 1.9 in the long run.

People criticise the noise out of the 1.9 TDI but the 2.0 TDI from back then is a PD engine like the 1.9 TDI is, it's only the newer 2.0 TDI's that offer this advantage.

I would say go for the 1.9 if you're happy enough with the power from it.

If you think the 1.9 isn't fast enough and don't mind spending a bit more on petrol, then the 1.8T is an outside option and though obviously much heavier on fuel it is practically bulletproof(aside from its fondness of needing new coils and coil packs). It has 163 hp over the 140 from the 2.0 or the 115 from the 1.9 and being turbo'd it should have decent low down shove, not as much as a diesel say but more than your average petrol.

There is also the massive advantage of it not having a Dual Mass Flywheel(assuming it's manuals you are interested in) either, these can cost upwards of 1500 to replace when they go(most modern diesels go through these every 60-100,000 miles), so the fuel savings may well be eaten away by this. You also have to consider that the 1.8T is rather unloved so will be cheaper to buy too.

    Plus, tax is cheaper too:)!

Anyone else think that those 2 "Irish" spec 4 year old A4s are really overpriced?

Those A4s are poor value for money when you consider what you get. Would you consider an A6 or 5 Series for similar money as those A4s:

More car for your money imo.
