    HELLO boys and girls,

    Quick question for you all.

I was wondering if it is possible to 'boost' the reception for wifi on my laptop for when I am out and about.

I have an Advent thing with a built in card...is it possible to get a new card or a plug-in solution to double or treble my reception without breaking the bank.

    Thanks a mill.

    K.

Moved to Laptops - they might have a better idea.

As for wireless card - you'd need to find out the exact model and specs for the Acer, find out what type of card is being used (usually BabyPCIe but could be proprietary :() then locate an appropriate replacement/upgrade (preferably with wireless-n support nowadays, for the range if nothing else). And installation is not for the faint-hearted :o

You can certainly get a replacement wireless card, some cards are known to have better performance than others. It depends what you currently have, and to be honest your are still using your laptops antenna so the difference probably won't be huge. With some laptops, they are extremely easy to fit (often there is a dedicated panel for the mini PCI-E card slots). Other laptops might not be so convenient though.

You can also get an external USB (or other) wireless dongle with a socket for a plug-in antenna. Plug in a decent sized antenna (or cantenna) and you should certainly have better reception than your laptop solution. Although that may not be a practical 'out and about' solution.

You can also go into your wireless card properties (and also the Windows 'power plan' option) and maybe see if there are any power saving features that are affecting your performance.

Build yourself a cantenna. Used to use one myself for boosting wireless reception over a much greater distance when I was sharing BB with a neigbour who lived down the road (this was back when having BB required you to sell a kidney, so it was cheaper to share it).

    Thanks for the help..

I might give the usb antenna thing a go.

Where would be the best place (price...:D) to get one and how will I know if it is a good one or not.

What do I need to look for?

    Thanks again
