Is there a way of testing a boiler to see how efficient it is. Using too much oil etc.

Testing Oil boiler efficiency is pretty much standard when you have Oil boiler serviced by a proper boiler service person. Service person can test combustion with a probe inside flue, from flue gases a reading can be taken to monitor how well oil is burning, if reading shows bad signs service person can adjust burner settings to improve efficiency. Things like boiler condition / insulation / flue etc also come in with efficiency, most will leave a report and each time boiler serviced (by same person) report will be filled out so you can keep check on boiler efficiency.

Look out for dedicated Oil boiler service persons either OFTEC recognized or qualified through FAS. Watch out for the cowboys who only arrive with a hoover, if any.
