I have being using vodafone wireless broadband for quite awhile and sometimes the signal is well awful. it dies at times just as I am at the checkout buying something.

Another poster in another forum mentioned he had 3g and had little or no signal. He rang them to disconnect and a guy came out to the house and put in a signal booster in his attic and he has a smashing signal ever since.

What do I need pleez help, love the net but am dying here, no phonline available:(

If there are other wireless device in the same area as you on the same channel, move your one onto a different channel.

Repeater would do the trick otherwise, but most of the time crap signal is due to to many device talking on the same channel.

How do I move it on to a different channel sorry, that makes no sense to me.

or a repeater can I buy that device in a computer shop like pc world

    Use "netstumbler" on your laptop/pc.
it will show you the list of wireless devices in your area.
Find a channel that isnt being used and set your wireless router to that channel.
Also the only 3 non overlapping channels are 1, 6, and 11.
So if most are on 1-5 then set your to 11

The thing is I don't use a router as I just use the vodafone internet connection direct into a usb port in my laptop.

maybe I'm in the wrong forum!!!

    Hi
I am on the edge of 3 coverage so could not get a signal inside my house. I could just about get an unreliable signal out in the back garden.

I bought a high gain antenna which is connected to a device that sits on top of the E220 modem which boosts teh signal. Now I can get the signal inside the house - only about 1 bar but it is consistent at least.

The antenna was from Poynting direct in South Africa but they now have an agent soomewhere in Ireland (Carlow I think?)

    Link here http://www.poyntingdirect.co.za/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=K-LPDA-A0021-7M

The adapter they show now is different to mine
    Mine is like this

From memory it was about €110.

Depending on the actual signal strength outside your house there are a few options...

If you have a good signal outside....
    1) get a UMR box from dovado and put in it a place where the signal is strong. sometihing like an attic window that is pointing in the direction of the base station. You can find base station locations for all networks on the comreg site.
The UMR allows you to connect your BB modem to the router and the router provides wifi around you house.
wifi repeaters are cheaper to buy if you have a big house (or old house with thick wallls)

This is the soln I use and it works for me 99% of the time

    2) 3 provide a fairly ugly soln also with the NBS scheme. It is supposed to improve the signal quality. it comes from a company called Nextivity.
    http://www.nextivityinc.com/
I am with 3 on the NBS and this box came free but it didnt see to improve anything for me so I use option 1 above....

If you are on the edge of a cell and the signal strength is poor then there is very little you can do .....

Is that base station locator on http://www.askcomreg.ie up to date? I think we're getting 'leakage' from next door parish who are NBS enabled, yet there's no '3' station showing in the area at all?

The problem is in my brothers house, which is only about 2-300 yards away from me. I have a great signal in my house yet his connection is brutal slow.

I must check the signal with my laptop outside his house..

jeepers I don't know which thingy to go with....

I cant find the base station finder on askcomreg.ie what is it under???

Do you have different colour lights on the modem in the different locations?

Try setting it to 3g only and get the modem as close as possible to a window before you start forking out good money on another solution.
