Panasonic TXP50G10 - right choice or not?

Recently upgraded to Sky HD. Measured room for HD and decided to upgarde 32" TV to get full benefits of HD. 46" would have been OK for room size but I went for a 50" Panasonic TXP50G10 plasma. It was reduced from 1700 euro to 1000 euro.

Got a home cinema system aswell. Great picture and sound. Sky movies and sports in HD are a joy now.

Brother (the type who thinks he knows everything :)) had a look at new TV and thought I should have got a LCD instead because plasma's suffer from screen burn-in.

Did a quick search on the web and some reports say that the new plasma's have an improved technolgy and don't suffer as much from burn-ins. Is this true?

Would I have been better off going for a 46" LCD instead? Or is the plasma I got for 1000 euro (reduced from 1700 euro) a better buy?

    What do you think? Thanks.

Cant comment on whether it was a better buy or not because personally i think the choice between plasma and lcd comes down to personal preference, but to be fair the 50G10 for 1000€ is a very good deal.

As for screen burn, dont worry about it, panasonic plasmas are extremely resistant to burn in, its very unlikely it will ever happen to your set

    Zonda999,

Thanks for the reply. Good to hear panasonic plasma's are resisant to screen burn-ins.

    You chose very wisely.

Screen burn in is problem of the past and there are very few sets on the planet better than what you ended up with.

Screen burn would be an issue for plasmas in pubs/gyms/hotels who are showing the same channel day in, day out that has a logo on it or an info bar like sky news, even then this would take months and months of not changing channels.

50G10 for a grand is a hell of a lot of TV for you cash.

Don't know if they'll deliver. You definitely won't get a better price anyway.

Where is the TV, and the price, listed on their site?

Sorry, you are right, it works now. When I first tried it I got a page for a Walker brand Tv. Then when I did a search for 'Panasonic' the only TV that came up was a 42" HD-Ready

Thats a serious price for tv as good as that at this stage. A review i've seen of the G10's successor, the G20, says the step up from the G10 is'nt huge with the main area's being the THX certification and daytime black levels, the 50G20 wont be anywhere near that price for a very long time!!

    I'd guess a year.;)

I would wait for the G20 as the G10 is now firmly implicated in a noticeable black level decline after 500+ hours (as are all the 2009 Viera Plasmas). The 2010 models supposedly incorporate Kuro technology which pretty much guarantees consistent inky blacks.

I had a quick look at some of the converstaions going on over this issue and one struck me as probably the most pertinent:
I would just like to point out that two more people who didn't perceive that there is a problem (subjectively) have actually now measured and confirmed that they are actually experiencing the rise. That makes three people now total who didn't think there was a rise (subjectively) and confirmed that there was... again, no data which contradicts the idea that they ALL rise.

So, I think there is not much doubt anymore that we have corroborated the idea -- reinforced by D-Nice's contacts and Panny's admission -- that all sets will rise.

However, it also confirms the idea that most people will never notice or care.

To notice this issue at all, you apparently have to habitually watch your TV in a darkened room.

I don't disagree with you about waiting for a G20, that is just sensible, but I think the issue is probably being overplayed a bit, or at least I hope so.

AFAIK its only the V series 2010 models that have the Kuro technology this year.

I had made my mind up that seeing as I am happy with the PQ of my 42PX70's and don't notice any of the supposed issues and am happy with the blacks, that I could happily 'Live' with a G10. It'll still blow my PX70's away. Got the go ahead from SWMBO yesterday to get the 50G10 even though we won't have room for it till May, so I could get the amazing discount price.

    They're all gone!! :(

Certainly in Powercity. Showing 0 stock in all stores. :(

Anyone know anywhere else that might still have some at a sub 1000 price?

    Article in yesterday's Times

Sounds like they could be the 50G10s to me. Give them a call and see.

think the 50" might be too big for the room so might try and source a 42" G10 if possible?

Rang the panny store in Limerick and they said they will only be getting x20,s20 in the 42, 749 and 899 respectively . Also think they mentioned they would be getting a V20 for 50" for 1899 - not sure if i picked them up right tho..

I'm getting a bit caugt up in all the features now and have lost sight of what i want compared to what i need....

~Usage : SD content from sky box - , watch a ton of sports, PS3 for bluray and gaming, seating distance 8-10 feet

any recommendations lads...(bit off topic sorry)
