It was shocking, poor people of Madeira, must be in deep shock and sadness, it all looks tsunami like.

Ironically the reason for this is the fact that the jet stream is so far south. These are the depressions that should be effecting Ireland and would be normally.

I suppose it is even worse further south given the warmer air.

    The day Madeira died.

You have to look hard to see outline of island under that mass of cloud near centre of image.

Some rainfall readings for Saturday morning:

    Funchal
    52mm from 9-10am, 108mm in 6 hours to 11am.

Pico de Aeeiro (highest point, 1851m)
    58mm from 10-11am, 165mm in 6 hours to 11am

The Portuguese Met Service have an article on it on their site (in Portuguese) http://www.meteo.pt/pt/otempo/comunicados/index.jsp

The orographic lift in the warm sector was responsible for the enhanced rainfall. For anyone who's been to Madeira it's basically a steep mountain coming out of the sea, so there's nowhere for such rainfall to go but down. I was there a couple of years ago and can imagine the scene. A beautiful island dessimated.

surely something like that would have happened before if it was down to that i.e. steep mountain? or were the rainfall amounts unprecedented?

They just say the 6-hour Funchal rainfall was "above the 61-90 average"...which is pretty obvious I would have thought.

I'm sure in the near future they will publish a study on it, as they've done in previous occasions.

I notice there have been no weather reports since the weekend, maybe communicatinos are down.

December and February were very wet months in Madeira. In February alone (up to the 22nd) 426mm of rainfall has fallen, that's 70% of the yearly average! And it's not going to get any better Friday, with a similar system set to develop in the area.

It looks like there's more heavy rain heading for Madeira and then on to Spain.

Thankfully there wasn't a repeat of last week. At Pico de Areeiro, (1818m), rainfall was pretty tame through the night in comparison, but look at the windspeeds at Caniçal/São Lourenço, located on the east coast, so probably subjected to Foehn winds.

Some bad weather this morning in the eastern part of the Azores, with the island of São Miguel registering some major rainfall and windspeeds. A schoolbus was washed away, with up to 4 deaths, depending on which reports you believe.

Just look at how suddenly the wind picked up at Santa Maria airport  Light northerly breeze of 6 knots at 11am, then gale force 32 gusting 44 knots at 1130am, and 47 gusting 59 knots at 1230!:eek:

    What direction is it tracking?

It's going to deepen slightly to around 984hPa as it moves eastwards over the next two days or so, filling before reaching the Portuguese coast, but still could bring showers and thunderstorms.

Just got back from Madeira today - weather mixed - alot of heavy rain at night -thunder & lightening etc. Sunshine and showers during the day, some days very overcast. Average daytime temperatures about 17 degrees c - night time about 15/16 degrees C. They've done an amazing job cleaning up Funchal but the scale of the damage is still very clear - roads and bridges are missing and the lido on Funchal has been completely destroyed. They are very resilient and everyone seems to have got involved in working to get the place back to normal.

I've just seen confirmation that 387mm of rain fell from 02:40 - 17:30 (15 hours) in a mountain station during that spell in Madeira on February 20th. That's well over a foot of rain, or if you like, about half of Dublin's annual rainfall!!
