Do I need a prescription for new malaria tablets?

    Hi all,

I am currently abroad and taking malaria tablets called Lariam. I've recently found out, from the net and word of mouth, that these tablets can have some side affects including severe depression, anxiety, paranoia, aggression, nightmares, insomnia, seizures, etc.

I think I'd like to change my tablets to ones with less affects. I am not suffering from many of the above apart from the vivid dreams, nearly every night. The day after a night's drinking I get very anxious but I don't know if that is the tablets or just the darn drink!

My question is, do I need a prescription to be able to buy new tablets from a pharmacy? The doctors visit would cost a bit so I'd perfer to leave that out.

Also, do any of you know where it would be cheaper to buy new tablets, in South East Asia or Australia?

    Thanks!
    Walrus

Where are you at the moment? Doxycycline can be purchased very cheaply in SE Asia but it's a prescription anitbiotic here and I imagine that would be the case in Aus. Who the hell gave you Lariam?!

In Europe, yes. In Africa, you can get Doxycycline over the counter.

Frankly, if the only side effects are vivid dreams, stick with larium. Doxy is a pain, it still has side effects (I found it heavy on my stomach, and made me very sensitive to sun and alcohol) and you have to take it for a month when you come home. Malerone is expensive, and also legendary for its vivd dreams. Obviously, any of these is better than malaria... so there isn't really a good answer!

I visited one of the worst medical facilities I've ever visited n Dublin, THEN I read about Lariam.

I'm in Saigon but I'll be gone to Oz in a few days..

I'm sure you can get doxy there. As CT pointed out, it's a total pain in the ass having to take it daily and for a month after. I have been lucky not to suffer from any of those side affects. Doxy also has the benefit of being basically a broad spectrum antibiotic so it will help protect against other illness too.

Where are you going that you need to be taking anti malarials?
